You can tailgate for the game. Lots open at 8, but supposedly this rule is hardly enforced.

Considering staying a bit further away because I might be able to pay for the whole thing in points if I do. Also, I'll have my 11-year-old with me so barhopping is out. Is McKinney ok? I've seen some deals there.

McKinney is not too far away. Maybe 15 miles away, (or a little longer but just as quick if you take the toll roads). It's one of the few "historic" looking towns on North Texas. Most are just giant suburbs. The old court square part of McKinney is on the east end of the city boundaries and has plenty of restaurants.

Would it be a mistake to stay in Downtown Dallas? I've been there for work a number of times and always stay downtown and enjoy it. Was thinking of doing the same this time.

I mean, it's really all preference. For us, we decided to just stay outside of Frisco (Richardson) and then use items like Uber to get to and from events if we planned to be out for a while. We also do have a rental truck for the weekend as well.

Can you get beer/wine in gas station/supermarket?
Is hard alcohol ABC stores?

Will be bar hopping at night but thinking for tailgating and airplane bottles.

Looks like there is a Total Wine 2 minutes from the Home2Suites and surrounding hotels that has beer, wine, AND liquor. Score one for Texas there.

I haven't been to Texas in over a decade, but I seem to recall that they don't have ABC type stores like some states do. I think there are independent liquor stores and I want to say some grocery stores even sell liquor. Correct me if I'm wrong.

correct--private liquor stores are all over the place, or you can just get liquor from Costco.

I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Dallas Plano/The Colony (~7 miles from Toyota Stadium). My group is looking for the best bars for Friday and Saturday nights. I've seen the JMU event planned for Friday, but would also like to know what bars JMU fans will be congregating at. Any suggestions?

Staying at the Magneson Suites in Plano but am also looking to find the best congregation of JMU folks. Also planning on getting there and perusing the tailgate lots.

Funny, I used to live in Allen and Plano and now live in Cary, small world! We are excited to see some old friends and root for the Dukes!

Frisco - Nerdvana video game restaurant just opened across the street from Toyota Stadium. IFly indoor skydiving, but not cheap at $70 per person.
Downtown Dallas, 30 mins away - Klyde Warren Park has free ping pong, putting green, foosball, board games, occasional food carts and trucks. Perot Science Museum is $12 for kids, $19 for adults. Dallas World Aquarium is $15 for kids, $21 for adults. Katy Trail Ice House is a great indoor/outdoor family friendly gravel patio bar.
Fort Worth, 60 mins away - Rodeo at the Stockyards in a touristy Old West atmosphere, $13 for kids, $22 for adults, Fri and Sat 8:00pm, at 121 E Exchange Ave. Ft Worth Science & History Museum, $12 for kids, $15 for adults. One free admission on 1st weekend of each month with Bank of America credit/debit card.

Potomac
Tolls from DFW Airport north exit to Toyota Stadium: approx. $3 ($2 on Sam Rayburn Tollway, $1 on Dallas North Tollway)
From DFW Airport south exit to Toyota Stadium: approx. $4 ($3 on Bush Turnpike, $1 on DNT)
From downtown Dallas to Toyota Stadium: approx. $5 on DNT

Dadgum
!!! EDIT !!! per Toyota Stadium staff "first year for beer and wine sales throughout the stadium concourse to general public for the NCAA FCS Championship game."

DooX
Plano was voted recently #5 safest city in the US. All the northern suburbs are no problem.

Mckinncm
Legacy area (Marriott, Aloft Plano, Courtyard Legacy Park) is good for walkable pedestrian high class bar area. Stonebriar has more hotel options but a little more spread out, less centralized.

JackiePapers / JMU2009
Thursday, Friday, and potential Saturday post game official JMU events are TBA. JMU Alumni Assoc will be making the initial announcements and DFW alumni can publicize from there. Friday night you should be able to throw a dart at a Frisco map and find a healthy purple contingent.

jmu007
Midnight Rodeo Dallas on 17727 Addison Blvd, 20 mins south on DNT. Open till 2am on Friday, dance lessons at 6:45pm on Thurs and Sats. Nothing doing in Frisco proper yet...

QuinDuke
McKinney is fine, a safe northern suburb, 15 mins northeast of Frisco on Rayburn/121

novirginia / JMU2004
Tailgating lots open at 7:00 AM central time, don't listen to FOATI it is a great time zone

FOATI
Beer/wine is in most convenience stores and groceries, liquor is less widely available but still common. A couple superstores a few miles west on the Rayburn/121 is Spec's (cartoon rabbit sign) and Goody Goody (green lettering)

Merry Christmas! Who else got purple under the tree?!?

I had to wait to see if my wife would be able to get off work before I could book. Yesterday the hotels were $50 or more less expensive than they are today. How far outside of the areas you list should we be willing to go?

We are staying down around the Galleria, about 20 minutes south but still on the north side of Dallas, prices are much more affordable and getting to the airport on Sunday morning a little quicker.
