Careful calculations, precision and...nah, just the endless circle-jerk from posters who think such a thing is worth arguing over every single day.

Kiffen will do well in Houston and they are MUCH more forgiving than UTK or USC. He'll have a long leash. I am really surprised he didn't wait or take one of the P5 jobs though. I thought his stock was high enough to get a decent P5 job now.

"Over and Over"?

He coached TN for one year. They had a modest improvement from the year before, going 5-7 to 7-5. He brought in the #1 recruiting class in the nation.

Them USC called. Hard to turn that down.

The USC program he took over was limited in scholarships and bowl eligibility because of the Reggie Bush stuff. He did well, all things considered the 1st two years, going 8-4 and 10-2.

The third year USC was preseason #1 and failed to live up to expectations. He was the head coach, but his OC is now the head coach at USC and his DC is now the head coach at LSU. Seems he had the right people in place and good management.

You don't get fired on the tarmac if your doing things right

Uhh, if I were President (or whatever) at Southern Cal, I would have fired the AD point blank for that ****.

RE: Kiffen to Houston
This is one thread that will certainly be worth revisiting 4 years from now.

If someone could give me an example of a fired college coach who resurrected his career under the auspices of 'being smarter, being more humble', I would like to see it. I know that there are some good college coaches who were fired from the pros such as Pete Carroll.

Rick Neuheisel is probably the best analogy for Kiffin. Cocky as all get out, supposedly a great recruiter, got multiple chances (Colorado, U-Washington and finally UCLA) and he never hit it big, even with a lot of resources.

Tommy West resurrected his career here at Memphis after he was canned at Clemson. UNLIKE Kiffin, he wasn't (and isn't) a total tool. Same with Pete Carroll, not a total tool.

The last 'fired' college guy to get a gig was Charlie Weiss and he was awful at Kansas.

You could say Petrino, but Petrino wasn't ever fired for lack of on-field success, like Kiffin.

Anybody know a college coach who was fired from a D-1 school and then resurrected his career at another D-1 school? Seriously, I cannot think of any of the top of my head. MAYBE Will Muschamp, but he ain't exactly killing it at South Carolina (still only one season) and Mark Richt. Richt is a great guy and was really pretty darn successful at UGA, it just that he had to coach against Saban all these years.

Will see how Kiffin does at Houston. I am going to say he isn't going to be killing it. We shall see however.

Kiffin was fired for lack of success?

He went 8-4, 10-2, 7-5 and 3-2, all while having to coach through massive scholarship reductions, bowl sanctions, and free transfer out of USC for those who wanted.

He walked into USC late in the game for the 2010 recruiting and pulled the #1 class, all while UTk was #9. He essentially recruited TWO top 10 classes in the same season.

He then pulled in the #4, #8, and #13 classes.

The 2013 class was only 12 players. Five 5* and seven 4*--the most 5* in the nation of any class.

Basically, three of his classes were sophs, frosh, and redshirts when he was fired 5 games into the season.

Haden was just a doofus.

Case in point:

Got my Stoops bros mixed
Cutcliffe several bowls at Duke
Rich Rod 4 straight bowls before this year
Holtz second straight bowl
Bowden bowl last year
Solich bowl this year
Davie bowl this year

None on hot seat.

Question was coaches that have resurrected a career after being fired not won a national title.

I guess it is subjective. From where most of those names came from and where they are now, is a big step down. I wouldn't consider that a resurrection.

Also, Bob Stoops is also in his first gig as a HC.

There's always the chance he comes waltzing into Houston assuming it will be easy pickins beating up on all of these G5 teams in the AAC, totally underestimating the league like everyone else is doing.

Probably could have been handled better, but he definitely earned the firing.

Deflating footballs on the sideline. Having players switch jerseys. Lining up to go for 2 after every touchdown. Getting punched in the face by an assistant coach before the Sun Bowl. It added up after a while.

Not to mention that "ROAD CONFERENCE GAME" was his 8th loss after bringing a sanction riddled program back to life (10-2 finish in 2011, resulting in a #1 AP preseason ranking).

Either way, I don't miss Kiffin or Haden. Coach O on the other hand...
