Some of these coaching candidates are upgrades. AAC may be improved
The big one for me is Charlie Strong to USF or Cincinnati. If that happens, I think Strong is back in his element. Especially with USF, his proximity to all that talent could finally win USF that elusive Championship.
Many pundits are openly questioning Taggerts body of work at USF. One thing they can't deny is the program has been 'cleansed' of Skip Holtz and is a desirable job.
So, we have 4 open jobs in the AAC.
Cincinnati
USF
Houston
Temple
Cincinnati will have to try very hard NOT to upgrade
USF, Houston, and Temple, are all more attractive jobs now than they were when Taggert, Herman, and Rhule, were hired.
I don't remember seeing the quality in the names we've seen to date the last time these jobs were open.
Of course I have my preference but I wont get into that. It's actually not a bad time for the AAC.
Simply make good hires, like Memphis did last season when Norvell took over for Fuente. They took it up a notch.

If I had to warrant a guess, the OSU OC will head to Cincy, and the DC (Schiano) will go to USF. I doubt Strong goes anywhere with that payday he has coming if he sits tight. Riley to UH. Temple will probably go with somebody like the HC at Toledo.

Willie -> Charlie is definitely not an upgrade.
Tommy -> Charlie is an upgrade.

What would Willie do without Flowers? He didn't do much without him before.
All of these departing coaches had TOP senior QBs.

And what did Charlie do without Bridgewater?
His game management is abysmal. His positives are that he recruits well and runs a clean program. His abilities as HC on the football field are shoddy at best.

Florida is Strong's wheelhouse. He's more likely to find the next Bridgewater there than Taggert, imo. He has the bigger brand name.
I think USF becomes a stronger brand in the state of Florida with Strong behind the wheel of the Pirate ship in Raymond James.

If I was a UCF fan I wouldn't want Charlie at USF either, lol.
Strong recruited 15 NFL draft picks in four seasons at Louisville and will add 3-4 more in the upcoming draft. I probably don't have to tell you where most of those kids came from.

I'm liking Joe Moorhead for Temple.

why is everyone assuming Strong is going to coach again right away?
He has 10 million reasons to take at least a year off and recharge

Does anyone even want the UC job?
Pretty sad when the MAC flavor of the month turns you down.

REALLY sad when a team playing its last home game of the year falls behind 24-7 to the worst team in the league.

If Riley comes to UH, I wouldn't mind. He'd have to talk Orlando into staying though so we could keep our defensive system in place.

Based on the 3 alledged finalist, Houston won't be upgrading. Kiffins the only one with a really high upside---but he's risky as hell. The two in house guys are--well, they are in house guys. They are both downgrades, but to what degree? Thier fate will likely depend on what kind of staff they can attract. The upside is they should have a nice assistant budget to utilize.

This is what im worried about. If pj fleck was not so set on a going to a P5 job i would say he should be our top target.

I think with the in-house guys you have to put stock in their ability to assimilate what they've learned these last two years under Herman into becoming an equally effective coach. It's not unheard of.
Tom Herman was only under Urban Meyer for 2 years, yet he credits much of his coaching style and ability to Meyer.
If we really want to replicate the results of that hire, there really is 1 route. Imo, it's Orlando.
Every hire is a roll of the dice. Herman was a roll of the dice. But there are sound reasons for going in house with this one.

Can Lane Kiffin be considered an upgrade anywhere? Certainly not at Houston...
