RE: CUSA Basketball Week 2 11/20/16-11/26/16
I'm in the totally perplexed camp on why we can't shoot a ft. I could probably go outside and hit 80% all day and I haven't played in years. I wouldn't let myself go inside at the end of the day until I hit 9 of 10. It's got to be mental at this point there is no earthly way a person who's done that 10's of thousands of times doesn't have the muscle memory.

ODU will shoot better. It is early and its almost impossible to stay low. But, players have different skillsets and Taylor will never be a decent free throw shooter; he has other strengths.
"Hack a Shaq" is still a bad strategy though. Especially aonce it allows our good defense to get set.
Be ready for some old fashioned dog fights, my conference usa brethren.

I agree w/you on it being mental. I believe it has a lot more to do with being in-game. The difference in mental pressure on a shooter during a close game and shooting ft's on your hoop in your driveway has got to be night-and-day.

My old friend, Jay Ladner, beat my old friend, Tim Floyd. Both from Hattiesburg. Can't see Tim lasting much longer at UTEP...

It's definitely mental. You can see the look on some of our player's faces when they get fouled. It's like "Oh no. I have to go to the line again." If you think you're gonna miss before you shoot, you're probably gonna miss.

We lost to TSU partially because of free throw shooting as well. Anything below 50% is just horrible and asking for a devastating loss.

If ODU can't figure out a way to score, this is going to be a loooooooong season. EIGHT points in 11 1/2 mins.

Up 25 to 23 at the half. Good contributions off the bench early.

Lethargic start after a huge OT game against the number 10 team in country last night. Coming out a bit flat is understandable.

Still scoring only 49 and 60 points in regulation isn't going to win to many games. Not when you run into a decent 3 point shooting team, which neither Louisville or LSU are.
I seen Louisville yesterday try and play "Street Ball" and none of their shots were falling. They play fundamentally sound basketball and take or create the right shot, they win that game by 10 in regulation, would have still been an ugly game.
I don't know what Johnny Jones is teaching at LSU but it isn't good. LSU may have run 4-5 good sets the whole game. The rest of the time they looked like a sloppy DII team on the floor. They had 3 shot clock violations and took way to many bad shots, when an extra pass could have got the ball into the right shooters hands.
It wasn't lethargic. You scored 8 points in the first 11 1/2 mins of the game. Yesterday you had 5 points in the first 10 mins of the 2nd half. That shows me a team that has no shot creators. Someone may step up and be one this year. But as of right now ODU has no one that can take it to the hole and find a way to score or hit a 3 on the court.
Don't get me wrong, I want a strong ODU team. But watching games against Louisville and LSU, I just don't see it.

We've got a team chock full of defence and no scoring threats. Key to best us is double Stith and porter soon as they touch the ball and let Talley foul out. Then put any of us on the line from 7 minutes on.

Our defense alone is going to win us a bunch of conference games. Im not concerned with number of points overall, need to look at points per possession. (Which are still low). Cusa teams are going to struggle to score .95 ppp.
Really important for Talley to get going. Him and Caver are the keys for us.

They will. Jeff always has the team working on defense first early in the season then responds by working on the offense after noticing it is so far behind. The defense is playing really well now. I would say it is at least on par with last year when ODU only averaged scoring in the mid 60's and went on to win 25 or so games.
We don't have anyone as good as Louisville in our conference and LSU would surely finish in the top half of C-USA as well. Losing by 6 points, especially with one game having to go to overtime, isn't reason for panic or to make long term predictions. The Louisville game result could have been different with simply making 2 or 3 more free throws when they missed 17 (I think) with some of them being the front end of 1 and 1's. I'm pretty sure they won't continue to shoot less than 50% from the line in games where they have so many attempts.

Big test for MT tonight against UNC Wilmington. Probably the best OOC opponent on our schedule to include Vandy, Ole Miss, VCU and Belmont. Seahawks favored by five.

After watching LSU get routed by Wichita State 82-47, I really thought ODU would beat them. I agree LSU is bad even for a SEC team.
