I'm not sure it does. Only 17 of 128 FBS schools are private (~13%), but 4 out of 20 longest-tenured coaches are at private schools (20%)

Also 5 of the Top 22 (22.7%; Notre Dame/Kelly = #22) and 6 of the Top 26 (23.1%; Stanford/Shaw = #26)

DB ranked 12th longest tenured coach in FBS.

What do you find interesting about it? I find it interesting that he has one of the worst W-L record in the top quartile of tenure.

None of the coaches with equal or longer tenure has less than a +15 advantage over Bailiff in career W-L (Stockstill, MTSU)

It says loud and clear that winning is not important at Rice, or is viewed as not possible at Rice.

Exactly. I would have expected an over-index (e.g., 40% of 20) vs. an equal index (20% of 20).

You boys are just going to have to settle this by comparing the average current tenure of coaches at public vs private schools.
I'll speculate (based on the top 20 data summarized already in this thread) that private school coaches' average tenure is at least 10% longer than those at public schools.

Jeff Traylor to SMU as Associate head coach. If SMU successful and Ags are not, will be head coach at SMU when Morris heads home to A&M. Just few years back both were in High school coaching.

If so, given the sample size, if you exclude Rice, those numbers might be equal. If average tenure is 4 years, Rice would increase the average private school tenure by 0.35, or roughly 10%.

I went ahead and took the medians. The median private school coach's tenure (Derek Mason, Vanderbilt) is actually 6 days shorter than the overall median (James Franklin, Penn State). No correlation found. Case CLOSED.
