RE: Open Thread -- 2016-17 Men's Basketball
Wow. The best player on the court tonight is Wofford's point guard. And it really isn't even close. And Wofford is 5-7 and plays in the SoCon. Ouch.

And because of that if VCU is within a few nautical miles of the bubble they'll be doomed.

RE: Open Thread -- 2016-17 Men's Basketball
Well they beat Wofford. 76-72.
But they were nearly outgunned overall and were VASTLY outgunned at guard by a 5-7 Wofford team. If Lammers isn't on the roster I don't think they come close to winning that game. Also, it would be nice if when a guard wearing gold gets hot if they wouldn't enter witness protection. Tadric couldn't miss ... and then he barely shot again.

And for any objective rating system, the narrow win was over a 2-7 Wofford. The Terriors' three wins over D2/NAIA opponents don't count.
It'll be a minor miracle if BC & GT dont finish 14th/15th in ACC play.

They both might beat Syracuse, who hasnt beaten a P5/P6 (Big East) team yet. SU realistically has the chance to finish 15th in the ACC if they dont get their stuff together. Their record of almost 50 years without a losing season might just come to an end this season. Oh well, I knew it couldnt last forever.

Is this a result of the NCAA sanctions?

I think the sanctions have very little to do with this. The main problem is that SU has had so many one and done's the last several years, (which opens up scholarships), that SU has had to get graduate transfers. There are two on the team now who might as well be freshmen. The 2-3 zone is difficult to pick up for most first year players. Then SU has 3 freshmen on the team. The team is very talented, but they need to learn the nuances of playing the zone. As I told you earlier, JB was gushing over this team before the season started, saying this may be his most talented team in years, maybe ever. He NEVER does that, so Im thinking that this team was going to take care of business. He's admitted that he and anyone else who thought this team was going to be good right away was silly.

After my reply I go to the Syracusefan.com board and find this article that goes in depth, explaining how the sanctions are impacting SU:
Sanctions Hurt Syracuse

Tony Bennett simply owns Rick Pitino. TB improves to 4-1 in the matchup.
Consider that Louisville is 27-2 in their last 29 games in the YUM Center. The two losses are both to Virginia, by 8 tonight and by 16 last season (worst loss in the seven year history of the arena).

ND went 11-2 in non-conference play. The two losses were against Villanova and Purdue where the Irish had 11-15 point leads but lost both.
It opens ACC play with a game at Pitt this Saturday.
