They do. But mandates need to be earned or the legitimacy of the results will be questioned.

DJT didn't win a mandate.

We appear to have had a legitimate election. Trump won.

Trump did not win the most votes. Period. No mandate. If the Dems get 55% of the votes for US congress but only get 43% of the seats, is that legitimate? At what point does the differential between raw vote and electoral results cast a pall on the legitimacy of the results?

Interesting as to how some folks have no problem with the Electoral College until it goes against them.

The answer is never, we don't have a national election in this country. Enough people in enough states chose Trump over Clinton.

That's the way the law works in this country.

Suck it up, wait your four years like a lot have had to wait the past eight, try again in 2020. And if you can somehow win this fictional "mandate" then your guys can try to change the laws again to favor your side.

Good luck, your guys will need it.

With the exception of an faithless elector, it doesn't. Period. End. Of. Story.

Elections have consequences.

RE: We Need To Listen to Each Other
Most countries that directly elect their President by popular vote tend to get demagogs for leaders anyway. I can do without turning the US into a South American "democracy". Those tend to have very bad political histories.

Sure, give us 4 billion in government grants like Catholic Charities does....and 3 billion like the Salvation Army gets....and we will be on our way. We might even raise 10 percent of our budget through tax deductions. And 200 billion to build hospitals and equip them.

When liberals get charities, they can't get funding (see Planned Parenthood). Even Legacy here in Houston didn't get funding when the HIV/AIDS money was pulled from PP (and replaced with 'nothing'). Why? Because Legacy hires Gay people and serves that community with respect.

What is misunderstood about this election is that if it were determined only on the popular vote, Trump would have run a slightly different campaign and likely would have won anyway.

Hillary was a bad candidate.

KellyAnne Conway is that good!
Glass ceilings shattered!

You're like the football coach who touts winning Time Of Possession in all his games while getting blown out by the other team 55-7 45-10, 73-14, etc....and saying "we're not a bad football team." (Hint, check #128 out or the Bottom 10 or 25.) The game is touchdowns, or in this case, electoral votes. Doesn't matter if she won popular vote by 150 million votes or 1 vote even. Maybe some of those should move to "flyover states and ignorant south." Oh, wait, apparently many are moving...out of the country to escape being prosecuted for their illegal choices and actions. An America run by Legal Americans who love their own country and Constitution more than others...what a concept.

Dude, leave Tom alone. He's a good guy. Just because his perspective differs doesn't mean he deserves the type of response you are cramming down all of our throats.

Oh, I enjoy the debate. But, the lengthy emails riddled with personal attacks detract from the debate and have become extremely tiresome.

Time of Possession (TOP). Will never guarantee you win the game...never. Concept works in other areas of life as well. Get some help. Get into a program and deal with your issues. You'll be happier, Tom. Your pain is obvious,as is your denial:

You definitely deserve some credit for hanging around. 95% of the rest of libs from here don't have the backbone to show up anymore. Only difference is Mach and the other couple aren't babbling on about changing the system because it didn't pan out for them this time. You're discounting the EC process and trying to segregate african americans in DC so they can vote how you want them to vote.
