If Kansas makes the NCAA Tournament...
It would be the longest streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances at 28, breaking UNC's record from 1975-01 of 27. The 28 would be evenly split between Roy Williams and Bill Self at 14 apiece.

When...
I think they already clinched the Big 12 title.

Don't take anything for granted, even Kentucky and North Carolina have missed the Dance a combined 7 times in that time frame. Jawdropping, isn't it? Duke missed once but that's because Alphabet Soup was injured and an interim coach had to take his place for half the year.

I'd be shocked if KU fails to make it this year. It would take a number of injuries

Or maybe they don't gel right or some recruits are overrated. Stuff happens sometimes.

Coach K was just fine that year. He left the team because he didn't want to absorb the losses from that season.

Cuse hasn't had a losing season since the 1960s. That is pretty impressive too.

RE: If Kansas makes the NCAA Tournament...
What an ego if true about K. I also didn't mention that UConn has missed 7 times in that span, Indiana 6 times, UCLA 5 (6*) times and Louisville 6. Kansas has never been seeded lower than 8 either during the run and pretty much been 6 or higher. Impressive, and over the last 27 seasons, only Duke compares. Since the Tournament is a crapshoot, we'll just say Duke and Kansas have been virtual equals over that time.

Well since you mentioned them, they've missed 6 since 1990. Your stat is impressive none-the-less.

Why was Duke so miserable (13-18, 2-14) in '95 anyway? It's especially bizarre when considering they played in the National Title game 4 of the previous 5 years and Final Four 6 of 7.

Coach K was in pain and needed the medical attention (surgery). The loss of one of the all-time greats Grant Hill hurt. He put Duke on his back and took them all the way to 94 title game. After he left, they weren't nearly as talented. Loss of leadership from Grant to NBA and Coach K out was too much for that Parks, Meeks, and Blakeney led 95 team. Not to mention the schedule was pretty strong...Wake had Duncan, Georgia Tech was top 25, North Carolina was great, Virginia and Maryland were really good. UConn and Michigan were top 25 and UCLA was ranked number 2 when Duke played at UCLA

Speaking of NCAA Tournament streaks, South Carolina hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since 1972, which is pretty incredible considering where it's located and how committed the school is to basketball. I think Northwestern is the only major school with a longer drought.

The last win by South Carolina was in a game that wouldn't even exist today (Regional Third Place game after losing in Sweet 16). But at least you guys have qualified, though not since 2004. Northwestern has NEVER made the NCAA Tournament. That's insane for a team playing in a conference like the Big 10.

Nebraska has never won an NCAA Tournament game but they have won the NIT. The other USC had some good teams that fell flat on their face in '97 and '98. As a matter of fact, I'd say Coppin State humiliated Carolina in '97.
Just imagine if Duke didn't have that hiccup in '95, they'd be working on a streak of 32 straight, including 12 F4's, 9 national title games and 5 national titles.

Northwestern ironically hosted the first Final Four.

Tough being an SC basketball fan. This might be the year, then again I thought last year was.

Surprised there are only 5 more than 6 in a row, as it seems like mostly the same teams every year. But just takes one bad year to drop off the list, I guess.

Im impressed with USCe. Their fans show up whether the teams, fb and bb, are winning or not. The attendance figures for both sports are just impressive. Cuse football fans can certainly learn something from S Carolina.

Yep...Arizona had one of 25 straight recently and Texas had one of 15-17 straight. It's hard, all it takes is one bad coach or one series of graduations/early defections. Even North Carolina has missed the Dance 3 times since 2000 and Kentucky 2 times in the last decade. That makes it all the more remarkable what Kansas has done, all those years without a dropoff or even a year as a bubble team. Duke too but they did have one slipup.
Some might say Gonzaga just beats up on a weak conference but they've only relied on the WCC auto-bid 1-3 times in those 18 years and are usually a single digit seed, so for as much as I criticize them as not being a legit top tier program, they are a legit NCAA Tournament team the overwhelming majority of the time.
