When there are a good number of people on the bridge, bike riders seem to be a big risk IMO.
Same thing on the greenline. I refuse to ride the greenline on a bike unless I'm with my kids riding. To many dog leashes that have almost taken me out.
Fall over the green line, you might get hurt but no hundred foot drop.
True but a broken bone or a concussion is no fun.

Any of you ever rode that sidewalk on the side of memphis-arkansas (old) bridge? It's so so so sketchy.
I rode the WRT Sunday as well. Very dusty. It was tough going with all the runners out there between walnut grove and g'town
I rode it not long before the grand opening. The new trail route seems kind of boring to me but I knew they had to do something to make it sustainable

heh. not really, they had re-routed it some time ago - I think most just didn't know it was open or didnt want to deal with the parking situation.

True the bridge is a century old but it is quite well built. If you walk west on the RR tracks to the east support pier there is a trap door to go below the tracks to inspect the bridge support. It has never had a problem with the foundation. Testament to how well built it was from the start.
As for the 85,000 pounds of freight per flat, the limit per is 45,000 lbs. The Harahan bridge survived the second big flood in the early 1900s and the river was so high that the water almost covered the tracks. That was in 1927 when the bridge was just about 10 years old. People were getting around downtown on Main St via john boats and flat rafts. The river in some places south of Memphis reached 50 to 60 miles wide.
So I don't think a few people and some bicycles will make it collapse.

it was an intermodal double stacktrain so it had two containers per flatcar both loading up to 42,500 #s. I've been in the rail business for 25 years.
