RE: Let's talk basketball
First game tonight! Men have Cairn University at home after the women host Duke! I expect a rout by the men and I hope the women avoid one.

Does anyone know anything about this school we're playing. Is it really a college for dog groomers located in Canada?

No, Cairn University, formerly called Philadelphia Biblical University (and earlier, "Philadelphia College of Bible"), is an institution of higher learning located in Langhorne, Pennsylvaniafounded in 1913. The University has six schools (Divinity, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Music, and Social Work).[2] All students take a minimum of 30 semester hours of Bible. Graduate programs at Cairn lead to Master of Science degrees, Master of Arts degree, a Master of Business Administration degree, a Master of Divinity degree, or a Master of Theology degree.

Good showing for the men today. That's about the spread I'd expect against that caliber opponent. Lots of action for many players. Good announced crowd too..... over 5,000.
Ladies took it on the chin though. What a whalloping!

Very nice first game. Newcomers looked solid and a lot of unselfish play. Huge week with VCU at Vines tomorrow and then at Indiana on Saturday. Love that we are playing top programs in the non-conference.

RE: Let's talk basketball
Huge game against Indiana, the #6 ranked team in the nation today. Would this be the biggest win ever for our basketball team? I think we can win but it is extremely unlikely, maybe 1%. Regardless, I hope for the best. Football season is almost definitely over so let's focus on our solid and improving basketball team! Go Flames!

Wow! That IU game was disgusting, just down right disgusting.
However, we need to keep scheduling quality teams like this every year. I think a couple of these each season is good for the program.

RE: Let's talk basketball
We didn't win and it wasn't even close. It just hasn't been our week, has it?
But I'm not discouraged. Like you said army56mike, I think it is good for us to keep scheduling games like this. I like to measure us against good programs and try to keep a good relationship with them.

Great win for us! Snaps that losing streak, even if the game was close.
BUT, less than a thousand fans in the stands!?! Really? I understand students are gone for break, but there aren't more fans than that in Lynchburg?
Maybe my perspective is skewed since my basketball examples from my home state are UK and UofL who each draw 20,000 a game.

Wow. Things aren't going so well right now. I thought things were looking up after the VCU game, but it seems we've stagnated or gone back some. What gives? I know we are still young. I think I even presicted a .500 season. But it seems we could have won these games, minus IU.

RE: Let's talk basketball
I too was hoping for more with our basketball team. We won't earn any respect if we don't win any non-conference games.
Our women's team is extremely disappointing. What's going on over there?

Well I suppose some of the players can feel good about themselves after tonights blow out 81-33, even though they play stiffer competition during practice. And the high margin of victory and low points allowed looks good on paper.
We should never EVER play another Div. II, III, or NAIA team in the regular season again. Preseason scrimages are fine. But it is bush league to count these wins.

I agree completely. Who is it helping by playing these schools? Not Liberty. I am happy for a win after the string of close defeats. Liberty doesn't have the program that can bring the fans in for the winter break when school isn't in session so I understand paying a non-Division I school to come in and take a beating but we just need to improve the program to a point where we don't need these games.

Well, that stunk. Lamar handled us quite easily and they made our defense look bad.

RE: Let's talk basketball
Another year of poor out of conference play. I thought after doing well in conference play, we'd have the momentum and improvement to do well throughout the whole season but that hasn't happened yet. Maybe we'll turn it around in the Big South. Why can't we have nice things like postseason play, positive national attention, FBS invitations?

Watched the 2nd half of the Houston game last night. While LU was hitting 3's it was in the game as the TV commentators noted. LU went from being tied to 18 points down in a matter of minutes as Houston drove to the hoop repeatedly rather than settle for outside jumpers as they did in the first half. Houston simply had better, taller athletes and players. My guess is that Houston thought they would have a cake walk and the players played at 80% in the first half, got their tails chewed out at halftime, and then executed fully in the second half.

That sounds pretty acurate. I hope wd can dominate in conference, maybe finish with a respectable record.
Dawson is a complete mystery. The level of play between last year and this year is incredible.... in the wrong direction.
Something has to be going on with the young man.

So far, so good in conference play. Of course we have played two teams we should have beaten anyway. But at least we handled the games well.
