The MAC is down
Across the board there are only 2 or 3 MAC teams I would feel confident in winning probable bowl matchups with the 2-5's of the other G5 leagues.
The 1-4 Huskies went ofer OOC and just beat now 3-2 Ball State. All of the cards wins had been against bottom FBS schools including a 10 point loss to middling IU. for Ball State's sake I hope they win their East Crossovers and IU gets to .500... I couldn't see them winning a bowl game... And right now EMU will be gunning for that Bowl game.
Based on last season and small body of work this season, here's how I see the MAC:
WMU ^^ Legit top 25 team
EMU ^ Will be shooting for worst Bowl team of 2016, but leaps and bounds ahead of recent history
CMU ^ They always hover around 6 or 7 wins. I think they get 8 or 9 this season
Toledo ^ 10-2 is on the horizon with another good bowl matchup.
Ball State = They've played some lesser teams and pulled out close games. Too early for me to give them an ^ arrow
Ohio = They're the same team every season
Akron = Marshall makes me want to say ^ but 7 wins isn't a gimmey.
Miami = Competitive just like last season... Not enough offense to win games though
Kent = Pretty good D, inept O. Nothing has changed for the flashes
UB v FCS losses are bad, and UB is bad
BG vv They've come down very far from a very respectable place atop the MAC.
NIU vv Just so much good in recent years, and down was the only place to go... But may be a bottom 4 MAC team.

RE: The MAC is down
Massey does % chance of wins of future opponents and Toledo has never had numbers like these:
93 EMU
89 BGSU
82 CMU
85 Ohio
77 Akron
87 NIU
93 BSU
44 WMU

Our three FBS OOC opponents are a combined 10-4 overall. I doubt any MAC team besides BGSU has played a tougher OOC schedule than us. If Maddie was our QB after Hare went down we could have possibly beat SDSU and definitely would have beat WIU.

You went 0-4. Sure it's Tough. But WMU would be 3-1 at worst with that schedule. Same with Toledo.
You still get vv because of where NIU's program was to where you are now.

We would be 2-2 in OOC if we told Carey to stay home and replace him with a mop.

Got throttled by 2 pretty bad FBS teams with an FCS loss. Yeah. Thats not going to give you an up arrow. Congrats beating Army tho?

Akron got throttled by a top 10 Wisconsin and lost by 1 TD to a team that is 1 of 2 serious contenders to win Sun Belt. I'd slot Akron as the MACs 4th-5th best team and I'd like their odds vs the 4th-5th best team from the C-USA, Sun Belt, or MWC.

Buffalo beat Army? Are you sure? You know Army won a national championship and had a Heisman winner so you must be wrong.

Akron will win some games because the East is back to being borderline Dumpster Fire-Level bad again and they MUST start playing Defense to even game a shot at 8 wins, let alone a Bowl....

Bowl games are strange creatures.
The MAC will be fine especially against the Sun Belt teams.

Akron still has games against BGSU, Miami, and UB who are a combined 2-12. They also have winnable games against Ball State and Ohio. Getting to 6 wins (bowl eligibility) shouldn't be a problem. I see them finishing the regular season 7-5. A bowl win gets them back to matching last years 8 wins.
Akron's defense certainly has flaws and it's what's holding them back from contending with UT and WMU to be the MACs #1 team. It's not like the 4th or 5th best team in the C-USA, Sun Belt, or MWC are without flaws. Hell the Sun Belt, C-USA, and MW don't even have 5 teams in their conferences with winning records.

Yes... If 2 teams do vv then you need 2 teams to go ^^. Right now we dont have that. SO FAR. If CMU goes 9-3 or 10-2 you will have that team who got a lot a lot better. EMU can be in that category too but barely escaping some very bad competition doesn't do it for me. Play Toledo tough on Saturday or go bowling and my mind will change.

This cracks me up. Time was (like before the season) that EMU was considered "very bad competition." And while EMU's competition isn't Top 25-laden. it's not abhorrent either. Wyoming just raised its record to 3-2 with a thumping on the road at rival Colorado State. So, let's stop putting Wyoming in that "very bad" category.
Understand, nobody at EMU is delusional about the 4-1 start, but please allow EMU folks to feel a little euphoric. I fully expect Toledo to stomp EMU on Saturday. And while nobody is seriously suggesting EMU is poll-worthy, it's also a bit of a kick seeing EMU get a vote in the coaches poll.

Charlotte, BG and Wyoming as a group is very bad competition. Charlotte is the worst team in FBS, and BG is near them giving up 77 two times. EMU has some play makers! I gave them an ^ arrow. They can be a ^^ BUT.... If they didn't win another game??? How surprised would I be?

But, here's the thing: If EMU had lost all those games, people would be doing their usual ripping on EMU and calling for its program to be booted from the MAC or discontinued.
Instead, it wins and the reaction? "Yeah, but ... "

Please understand, win or lose to start this season I don't believe EMU is a good fit for the Mid-American Conference.
EMU's results to start this season are solid. Starting 4-1 also in no-way diminishes my belief they should be booted from the MAC.
Make the MAC great again.
