Carey could have done better, but teams tend to crash hard after such a run.
Marshall also moved to a different (better) conference. If they were still in the MAC no telling how many championships they would have had.
Maybe. They were good when they had a record setting qb. They just got pummelled by Akron, so they're also not able to sustain their dominance. And their conference is not much better than the MAC.
Currently the MAC is better than CUSA.

RE: Carey haters - what did you expect?
Yes, one can argue that the QB talent is definitely dropped off sine the Lynch and Harnish years. However, the line play on both sides of the ball is horrid. Carey was a line coach. It is almost the worst part of this team. If you cannot open holes, or pass protect, your QB talent does not matter overall. That being said, there are still play calling issues and the offense is predictable. We have played 2 good G5 teams and a decent Wyoming team, but still we will see more as WIU is ranked in the top 25 of the FCS. I have little faith in the Huskies right now. I still do not see us beating CMU, WMU or Toledo.
In order to not miss out on a bowl game this year, we have to upset one of the MAC teams and win the rest. I doubt we do that plain and simple. Is it Carey's fault, not completely, but still he is the captain of the ship. He is in the end responsible. I still say we go after the NDSU coach. Kind of like when we got coach Kill. When do you decide to pull the plug. Do you say this year was a fluke, see what happens next year? Or make a break at the end of this year and move on. Either way. this year is a disappointment in the making just like 2007 was.

Boise State is good year after year, and they're in Idaho.
NIU has built a G5 power and if a coach can't keep that going he has no business being our head coach.
The reality is that NIU has not built a G5 power, rather they have built a MAC power. MAC football is inferior to G5 power programs as evidenced by the NIU bowl record since the Orange Bowl...overwhelming losses to G5 teams Utah State, Marshall and Boise State...and overwhelming losses to three G5 teams this year. The Utah State and Wyoming losses were actually less than overwhelming but those programs are certainly not G5 powers.
Consider when we lost to Utah State, Marshall, and Boise...under Carey's regime...
Under previous regimes we beat Fresno State (a good G5 program), Arkansas State (also a good G5 program as of the last 5-6 years), Troy, etc.
Now under Carey all we do is lose to other G5 programs, even bad one's. That's how far Carey has brought this program down.

Marshall was also cheating when they were on their run. Once caught they were not winning at the same rate.

Kileman will make a little under 500K (with bonuses). He probably can stay at the University for the rest of his career and recruiting is much easier for him than it would be at NIU. If he leaves it would be for bigger things than NIU.

RE: Carey haters - what did you expect?
As for me, I'm not sure I "expected" much, but I hoped we'd find it a little easier to recruit some guys with a little more talent, maybe beat out other G5 teams and possibly bottom P5 schools for a few recruits. I just hoped a slight bump in recruiting would keep us at or near the top of the MAC for at least a few more years. And make it easier to find another good dual option QB.

I may be wrong, but to me it seems like Carey is out of touch with the kids today. He seems gruff, not warm and fuzzy, and not an enthusiastic salesman. It's easy for the kids and their families to pick up the vibes - good or bad. If the way he acts on the field and in front of the press is any indication, I may be right. He just does not strike me as someone the kids gravitate towards.

RE: Carey haters - what did you expect?
Sorry but when punts are going 20 yards, players can't tackle, unnecessary penalties rack up, and the players don't show any emotion or enthusiam, the coach doesn't get a pass because "college football is cyclical."

No joke. The universal signs of a poorly coached team...bad tackling, bad penalties, bad offensive line/defensive line/special teams play.

Second to all of the above comments as to what was expected.

RE: Carey haters - what did you expect?
I don't expect 4/5 star recruits, or top 15 rankings or new conference.
What I expect is:
Winning the MAC
Recruiting on par with other MAC teams(WMU, Toledo, etc). We ranked 5th in the MAC in 2016 recruits and 112th nationally(2 spots above Wyoming). WMU has 19 3 stars, Toledo has 11, Miami(OH) has 9, Ball St has 7 and NIU has 5.
Developing the recruits that you do get
Having a backup qb who belongs in D1 football
Being prepared for the games
Not losing to wyoming
Being competitive against similar teams (Utah, Marshall, USF, Boston College)
