A friend just told me Rice is favored by seven. But I have a hard time believing that and have not confirmed.

If we lose to UNT does DB get fired before the following game? Or does the AD wait until the end of the season regardless of results?

End of season is more likely. Who on our staff would serve as interim head coach? IF (and that is a big if) a change is going to come during the season, it may be after the game at USM. We go into a bye week, and any interim coach would have two weeks to prepare for UTSA. But I just don't see us firing Bailiff in the middle of the year unless we completely go off a cliff midstream.
But let's win on Saturday first. As I posted in another thread, this game is must win on Saturday to maintain any chance of competing for a bowl and/or conference championship. Baby steps.....

RE: Pregame thread: North Texas @ Rice
If Rice loses this week and wants to send any kind of message that we are serious about competing in college football, then firing him would be a great way to send that message.
As for who could replace him ... who cares? We'd be 0-4 with a loss to a really bad team at home. Patterson or Thurmond if you want somewhat grizzled vet coach to act as an interim. Younger guy (Sloan?) if they are thinking about permanently elevating a coach from within the current staff (not my preference). Out-of-work coach if you want a new face (Jeremy Bates?), but aren't ready to make a permanent hire. As long as it didn't lead to a permanent hire, I'd take most Parliamentarians' current favorite whipping boys, Coach Edmondson or Coach Lynch, as the interim HC over the status quo, just because it would mean the athletic department cared enough to do something.
But let's not look too far into the future. So far it has been good enough for Rice football to lose their first 3 games by a combined score of 115-38 and not have any changes made.
I still think Rice wins this weekend. Would be great if the offense could figure things out, and North Texas QBs have thrown 5 INTs on the year and looked completely unremarkable (meaning their inept offense might not be able to take advantage of Rice's most glaring weakness at defense).

RE: Pregame thread: North Texas @ Rice
Why not fire him in the middle of the season or move him out out of the head coach position. Every other university has done it. It would for sure send a signal. I would vote for David Sloan to have a shout at head couch. He has been reasponsible for more Rice players in the NFL than any other. re (09-19-2016 11:24 AM)mrbig Wrote: If Rice loses this week and wants to send any kind of message that we are serious about competing in college football, then firing him would be a great way to send that message.

I just can't see DB getting fired mid-season, no matter how bad things get. Has Rice ever fired a coach mid-season, in any sport? None that I can remember. Although it does happen occasionally at the college level, mid-season firings are more typical in the Professional leagues.
I think a more realistic question is what happens after the season is over. I thought going into this season we would need to win at least 7 games for DB to keep his job. Never say never, but it looks like that probably won't happen. Hence, I'm now solidly in the camp of those that say it's time for a change. However, after reading some of the earlier threads discussing his contract status, I wouldn't bet the farm that he won't be back next year. I'm just not confident our Athletic Department has enough money to buy out his contract - or that any of our donors are willing to jump in and foot the bill. Combine that with the fact that DB is still well-liked by players, parents, and faculty, I don't think it's a done deal he is gone after this season.
This is all coming from the perspective of a non-insider. Maybe those more connected to the BOT and/or Athletic Department have a different, more knowledgeable take.

I can understand the eventual decision to bring DB back this year, thinking that I guess he deserved a shot to right the ship after the end of last season. Should we go 6-6 or worse, I could not understand any decision to keep him if we truly value building a winning program.

Confirmed. I also think we'll win this week, but, if we lose, I would only support firing Bailiff immediately if it had little to no consequence with regard to our budget for a next head coach. But I don't know that level of detail in his contract, so can't really criticize if we lose and it doesn't happen.

90-10 against coach Bailiff getting fired mid season. No money for buyout.
60-40 for his firing at the end of season if we go 3-9 or so. Still not a sure thing.
I'm very hopeful but not convinced that we will win this weekend.
I'll be there + Mrs Greyowl.
Are they now pouring St Arnold's at HRS?

From Friday night, it looked like they were pouring a lot of things. The group in front of me was drinking Lone Star (really?). A Baylor couple a little ways down had several beers of different varieties which they appeared to be enjoying a great deal. Evidently, wine is also available.

I saw Lawnmower 16 oz cans for sale at the new beer stands on the lower concourse (home side). Of course, they were out by the time I went in the third quarter. Believe the Roost in upper deck has on tap maybe?

I have a vague recollection of a Buffalo Bayou beer tent.
But that recollection is vague at best.

It depends on the offense. If we can get the run game going, it should be enough to win. The defense showed some improvement vs Baylor, and North Texas is nowhere near the caliber of offense we've faced these 3 weeks. But if the offense continues to struggle, North Texas will be competitive and it could go either way. I think the Rice pass offense will improve and the run game will dominate.
Rice 31
North Texas 20

Baylor fans drinking AND in public!!!! Oh the shame. Were they dancing too? "Guess What Isn't Allowed in Waco Is Allowed in Houston"
Perhaps the MOB should have had their performance about them...nah...the Administration would just have to write another apology.

Having played high school football for a team that fired their head coach after 3 games, my one comment would be that firing a coach mid-season in the college ranks, IMO, would pretty much scuttle the remainder of the season, unless the coach were uniformly hated by the players.
I can't see Rice firing a coach in mid season, except under extraordinary circumstances, and by extraordinary, I mean non-on-the-field related.
This same discussion was held in 2012, and no doubt that is why there are some expressing their opinion to that effect again. To the extent that the team still can attain one or both of their CUSA goals, I can't imagine a mid-season change. Those who are ready for a change (understandably) may not want to risk a 2012-like turnaround, regardless of whether or not it impacted decisions going forward. For reference, you can go back and look at the mid-season threads from 2012, and there were 'guarantees' that there was no way the team could turn things around, so Bailiff should be let go immediately.
I certainly am NOT predicting a turnaround this year (nor am I betting that there won't be improvement either). Nonetheless, the players, particularly the seniors, deserve the support of the school at working toward finishing their career the best way they possibly can.

Bingo! IIRC it was close to right after the Greg Hines plays everywhere game where a desperate Suitts had Hines play PG and basically let him free lance the entire game.
