RE: New AP Poll is out
I know LSU didn't show up, and we have Miles as the head coach, but how do we tumble 16 spots for losing by 2 in the back yard of a top ten team?

RE: New AP Poll is out
I think LSU and Tennessee fell too far and I think that Texas and Wisconsin are way over-ranked.

That said, I think the Houston rank is fair. That puts them in a spot where they can hold in the polls but doesn't vastly overrepresent them.

RE: New AP Poll is out
So far, the AP didn't give much love to the teams that scheduled tough opening week opponents and lost. Oklahoma dropped 11 spots from Week 1, while Notre Dame and Ole Miss dropped 8 spots each.

On the other hand, they practically swooned over Wisconsin (+22) and Texas (+25). I guess they are saying they really didn't know what they were doing when they made their preseason picks. But this week, of course, they have now got it right. Until next week.

I agree... It's not like we lost to an FCS team. Hell, it was a P5 team by 2 points in an away game. LSU was only favored by 10 on top of that. You'd think we were favored by 30 points and lost by two touchdowns.

Yep, and LSU dropped 16 spots for losing to the #10 team...by 2 points in an away game.

Actually, the coaches poll is one of only a dozen polls that got all 4 playoff teams right bothe years, and both G5 teams right.

RE: New AP Poll is out
The tough game that UMass gave Florida just knocked them out of the top 25.

Proud of the way our guys played on Saturday night. It was 10-7 with about 11 minutes to go, but Florida got lucky on a missed tackle and their new kicker was lights out on long FG's.

... which is largely because the coaches poll, and the AP poll, and others, start to conform to the CFP committee rankings once the committee starts issuing them.

The more interesting question is, how much are the committee discussions influenced by the pre-committee polls? Are the poll voters strongly influencing the initial committee opinions, or are the early polls about as relevant as a few guys arguing in a sports bar (or on an internet message board)?

Watching the game, I was sure that LSU had it in the bag on their last drive deep in Badger territory. If the QB throws the ball into the cheap seats, they still win with a field goal. If that had happened, they probably hold their high preseason ranking. If one play can make that much difference in sportswriters' perception of a team's strength, then the poll is pretty much worthless. But I think that goes without saying anyway.

Agreed... I blame the horrid playing on Miles's coaching, but Harris's bad decision cost us the game. A Junior QB starting his second year ought not be making poor decisions like that, and wouldn't if he was coached right.

I'm torn between secretly hoping for a losing season so they'll get rid of Miles (if that's even enough to do it) and hoping their talent takes them all the way from here out. Then again Wisconsin might just be a dark horse B1G winner this year and is really good.

A fair point with respect to the Coaches.

Invalid with respect to the 11 computer polls which got it right both years. Those formulas don't care/don't know what the CFP is doing.

RE: Week 2 Polls [merged]
um really when you look at both years- end of the season 7/8 playoff teams were pretty much easy as anything. 2014 Oregon, Alabama, and FSU were pretty easily in. 2015 all 4 teams were easily in. Also both G5 teams in the years were pretty obvious as well. The only tough thing was Ohio St/Baylor/TCU in '14.

And yet, only 12 polls out of 117 tracked by Massey got it right both years.

Everything looks obvious in hindsight.

RE: Week 2 Polls [merged]
And it was totally obvious going into the selection Sunday in 2014 3 of the 4 teams were in period. No way was Oregon, Alabama, or FSU getting left out. Boise was the easy G5 selection. In 2015 all 4 teams were in easily. Houston was an even easier G5 selection. There's no hindsight in that at all whatsoever.

AP is the only one I pay attention to. Coaches shouldn't have a poll.

Top 10 this week: THREE Big Ten, two SEC, two ACC, two PAC, and one G5. None for the B12, although Texas is #11. 04-cheers

stever,

Oklahoma was "easy" over Stanford? Not in my book.

yes, Oklahoma was easy over Stanford. 1 fewer loss, and had a good OOC win vs Tennessee. Not as good as Notre Dame, but still a good one. The loss to Northwestern killed Stanford. To pretty much all pundits, Oklahoma was in easily.

The reality is that probably very few coaches actually cast their own ballots. How could they? They only get to watch their team and their opponents play. They don't even have much time to look at film of anybody else. If the idea is that coaches are better equipped to evaluate other teams, then stop having their SIDs or secretaries fill out their ballots.
