Crazy Big 12 expansion scenario
What if the Big 12 pulls a big 12 and adds a combination of teams out of left field...

If, say, the Big 12 adds:
  • Tulane
  • Rice
  • Air Force Academy
  • Colorado State

What then? If the Big 12 is looking for academic adds, and teams that won't get in the way of Oklahoma or Texas getting into the Playoffs, I could legitimately see this happening... not to mention, these teams expand the footprint while still being in the footprint.

RE: Crazy Big 12 expansion scenario
I'm thinking at that point it would be great for the American, as it would entice Army to see the writing on the wall, and fill that void left by Tulane nicely. Great foresight Tulane! Adding a triple option coach to prepare us for Army when you guys leave! 04-cheers

Air Force turned them down once already. But they make more sense than CSU to me.

RE: Crazy Big 12 expansion scenario
That would be exceptional for the AAC as this league will still keep its big power dogs intact. No offense Tulane.

Who do we replace Tulane with?? I like UMass.

Army FB only, no way they remain independent and behind while their peers excel into strong conferences.

Match them with Dayton + WSU Oly sports. Pack it, sign it, profit. Boom.

My "left field" B12 scenario is UConn and BYU football only. UConn moves all other sports to Big East.

Since ECU is out I want it to be Rice and CSU.

This would be ideal. Drop the bottom feeder and keep UH/Cincy.

I see a lot of people wanting one sport only invitation which I guess is fine based on who we loose. My concern is baseball which we've had a very good league. If we're raided heavily of schools and dependent on who is taken our baseball league can be damaged heavily. Personally ECU has one of the stronger program's in the AAC and projecting to go to Omaha soon. I just hope leadership is taken this into their strategy going forward.

If Tulane is seriously going to get an invite to the Big XII I'd expect the SEC would try to head it off and invite us first.

If Tulane is going P5 again, i'd imagine they'd rather it be with back with them.

Considering UCONN and the BE have had talks about moving everything sans football, yeah I think this is likely. They are the only blue blood left on the board and the big XII state flagships have said that institutional fit is key. Actually makes sense.

Just to clarify

Army + Navy = 1 sport (football)

Wichita + Dayton = All sports (minus football)

Wichita would come in and be the best baseball and top 3 basketball program in the league right away.

Dayton has an average baseball program, but would also be a top 5 in basketball easy.

AAC basketball pecking order, imo:
  • UConn
  • Wichita
  • Cinci
  • Dayton
  • Memphis
  • SMU
  • Temple
  • Tulsa
  • Everyone else.

What does that matter to Texas or Oklahoma? If they go undefeated, or 1-loss, they're in the playoffs regardless of who they play. It's the Baylors and TCUs of the world that have to worry about conference legitimacy.

The SEC, specifically LSU, already owns New Orleans.

They don't, actually. Tulane didn't lose their fans to LSU. They lost them to the Saints when Tulane moved to the Dome. Its a Saints town now. Most people here don't have a college team. The LSU love is mostly from the white flight suburbs-- North Shore, Metarie, Westbank.

LSU is the most prominent because it is the most successful Louisiana team. But there are not many LSU alumni or real fans in New Orleans proper. Racial and regional politics have a lot to do with it. There is no love for Baton Rouge here (current events excluded). The Southern v Tulane game will probably be a sell out on gameday, actually-- for similar reasons. There are a lot of anti-LSU fans with no one to root for so they pull for Bama. If you'd live here you'd understand. The press loves Tulane. They push them harder than the greeniest of green eyed glasses whenever there is a slimmer of hope they might be good again.

And even if none of that were true, New Orleans only stays an SEC market if there is no other P5 program in the city, let alone the state. That changes pretty quick if Tulane is Big XII. If the SEC wants to keep New Orleans SEC they wouldn't let Tulane go the Big XII.
