Longtime University of Memphis Director of Bands Dr. Sidney McKay passed away yesterday morning.

Those of us that spent time in the MSOTS will never forget the profound impact he had on our lives.

Many of the friendships I have today are a direct result of Dr. McKay offering a dumb kid from a non marching program a scholarship.

Arrangements are still incomplete at this time.

Please lift his family, and our Tiger family up in prayer during this difficult time.
I was SO SORRY to hear about Dr. McKay. I was out of the band when he got there, but I was prez of the Band Alumni Chapter for a little while after he got there. He Was a gentleman, a great guy and band director and just a COOL dude. He cared so much for his "kids" and the program that I can't tell you. We often had talks about how the alumni chapter could help and it always ended up being pro band students and band alumni before anything else.

RIP Doc, now you have a great view of the band's formations. Don't forget your baton.

My hero. Whipped some drunk Ole Miss fan's a$$ right in front of the band at Vaught Hemingway in 1984, and then they arrested the Ole Miss pr!ck! Awesome! RIP Dr. McKay!

Remember that like it was yesterday - a couple of the drum line guys got some shots in too. Doc was a great leader and will be missed by many.

"In addition to "Doc," Dr. McKay had another nickname he earned from defending his female students from a drunk at a long-forgotten U of M game, Karen Bundy said. From then on, he was called "Cassius McKay" — a reference to boxing legend Muhammad Ali's birth name, Cassius Clay."

He died in a rehabilitation center in Memphis area. He was there for a broken collar bone...

That's just weird.

For anyone who was not at the game the other day, the MSS started their halftime show with a short tribute to Dr. McKay, including a solo fight song, like the one played for TOM II a few years ago.
