Miami is for sure one of the most historic programs in college football. Not really for the wins, but for the development of the game and coaches.

Being #2 on that list is still pretty good. There's probably a fair amount of bias towards recent years but it can't overcome Miami's history.

I would have definitely put Central Michigan ahead of Kent State. That said, Kent State has had a couple of national rankings. Perhaps that pushes Kent State ahead of Central Michigan in whatever system ESPN is using. I can't recall the Chips ever being nationally ranked.

Even more puzzling is why Ohio is so high on that list. Over Toledo? I don't buy it.

I don't ever recall Kent State being ranked.

Central Michigan did win College Division National Championship in 1974.

Only reason I can think KSU is #6 because of coaches - Saban, Holtz, Gary Pinkel played there, and Don James coached there.

What took Miami 128 years took NIU 15 years.

Kent State was ranked heading into the 2012 MAC championship game. Had they won, it would have been the Flashes in the Orange Bowl (and I assume hell would have promptly frozen over).

Kent State was also ranked in 1973 heading into a game against Miami, which was also ranked. Kent State lost the game and the ranking, but finished 9-2 in what was probably one of their best seasons ever. (Don James was head coach.)

RE: Sorry NIU, Miami still the most important football program in the MAC
Too bad Miami is mostly living off history (except for top 10 finish in 2003 under Big Ben and then the surprise conference title and bowl win in 2010). Here's hoping Coach Martin has the "ship turned around" this year. Miami still the only MAC team with 4 top 15 finishes in the final DIA (aka FBS) rankings....1955, 1974, 75 and 2003 with two in top ten.

RE: Sorry NIU, Miami still the most important football program in the MAC
I know this is for historical purposes, but you would think CMU having 10 guys in the NFL right now and 3 MACC in the last 10 years would push them ahead of KENT or some other teams. As mentioned, CMU and NIU are the only MAC teams in the last 12 years or so to FINISH the season nationally ranked. When is the last time Toledo, Ohio, or Kent won a MAC title? No disrespect but it's kind of like how UM trashes MSU when MSU has dominated them the last 8 years or so. Toledo is probably the best MAC team when it comes to beating P5 teams and I will give them that.

Miami and Kent have both been extremely irrelevant in recent memory aside from both having 1 good outlier season. CMU and WMU are routinely beating B10 teams and producing NFL talent. Not to mention going to bowl games every year.

It was 2009 when we went 12-2 and finished #23. The reason this is significant to me is because CMU and NIU are the only 2 MAC teams in recent times to finish the season ranked. That rarely happens because MAC teams will get blown out in a bowl game.

Before that you are going back to the early 2000's with Marshall and Miami. The MAC rarely sees national rankings to finish the year.

Even then that's only 4 times (unless NIU did it twice) that a MAC team finished the season ranked top 25 in the past 15 years and 2 of those were in the same season. Miami was special that season.
