RE: Men's Basketball Spain Trip
I just watched the highlights and read the short write-up, and two questions come to mind.

1. Anybody know why BJ did not play?

2. Did Madrid have the same players in game two that they did in game one?

Coach Jones has shown in the past the ability to make adjustments and will use this as an opportunity to motivate the team for this game and the other games on this trip.

All in all I thing the trip will be a positive for the team and hope it will encourage them to strive to work hard and give their all in every game. I believe trips like this do in fact bring the team closer together for the bonding and chemistry of the team. Ultimately it should enable the team to gel faster as a cohesive group, Coaches and players.

I would be encouraged if we were to score 80 points in a single game.

There are some nice things to see on this stat sheet:

Brandon with another solid game in points and rebounds.

Haynes had a nice shooting and scoring game.

Baker with another strong scoring effort and excellent shooting game from outside the 3 point line.

Talley with a decent shooting game.

Porter with 9 points while only taking 3 shots from the field. Got to the line a lot and hit his free throws at 70%. Wonder how he was drawing all those fouls?

Taylor with a perfect shooting game including 3-3 from the line to go with his usual strong rebounding effort.

Fields with a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio off the bench.

I haven't seen a lot of these guys play yet so I am cautiously optimistic about what I expect them to be this year. That said, I believe that ODU has the makings of a quick, rangy, athletic team at most every position with adequate backups off the bench. Looks like they could go 10-12 deep if they wanted to. I hope that they will be able to press some to utilize the depth that I believe them to have, and to play some zone at times to fully utilize their height. It could create match up issues for the opponent at times to have Porter, Brandon, and Talley on the court together. Mixing things up a little bit during each game would give the other team more to have to prepare for than us just playing our standard man-to-man, and it would also change the pace of the game if the other team got into a comfort zone offensively against our man-to-man.

Would have been nice to see this game with both Kah and BJ in action too. Hope they have a good time while in Spain, get some good practice playing together, and everyone makes it back home in good health.

Thanks for sharing the stats.

2 games in a row for Baker and a heck of a stat line for Haynes. I wonder why BJ didn't play?

The game was tied 14 to 14 in the 2nd quarter and Monarchs went on a 19-1 run. Wonder who were the sparks in that run.

DaBig, from the video I saw on Facebook yesterday it looked like both Caver and Talley were both very aggressive taking the ball inside. Talley with some nice mid range stop and pops. I'm thinking he might have a huge year.

RE: Men's Basketball Spain Trip
In reviewing the stats from yesterday's game the following stood out for me:

Positives -

They won.
Another good 3 point percentage game from Baker (every game so far).
Good rebounding numbers from the 3 big guys that played.
Another solid all around game from Brandon.
No turnovers listed, and 3 steals from Fields at the point guard position.
Good team defense to hold the opponent to 38 points.
10 steals.
6 blocked shots.

Negatives -

Poor shooting game as a team on the 2 point shots.
Poor shooting game as a team on the 3 point shots.
Poor shooting game as a team from the free throw line.
Too few assists - 7.
Too many turnovers - 17.

Overall I am beginning to wonder if they will be a decent enough 3 point shooting team to make it through the season with the number of wins that they seem otherwise capable of achieving. If not then teams will pack the lane tightly against them with a zone to negate the inside play of Brandon, Denzel, Talley, Porter, and Kah. Hopefully BJ (and others) can pick up their shooting percentage in that area by the time November rolls around. Also needs to do far better with the free throws during the season than they showed in this game. Still time to improve those areas though.
