I would agree with you regarding academics if athletic director's were the ones making the decision on expansion. However, since it's the university presidents making the decision, I think academics will probably be a factor. How much of a factor, I have no idea.
The factor then is perception, bias, subjective ratings - there's not a practical difference in the education that can be had (where similar disciplines are offered) between virtually any of the competing universities. I have a daughter who completed 2 yrs at UGA & finished at Kennesaw St - guess where the better education was found? Another child started at UGA & finished at GA St - same result. These "nat'l" ratings of schools after the top 50 are just perception & relationship based in many cases. Ironically this is the same bias I mentioned above where the Indiana's of the college world think they are above some of us in the AAC when the facts are they couldn't compete in the AAC either despite the additional $25-30M they receive.

My suspicion is many needed it long before now, IMHO.
Serious question : do you want Tiger fans to need counseling?
It seems some fans want the Big 12 thing to fail so they can be giddy about other Tiger fans supposedly losing their minds. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
Don't worry buddy. We got you at the top of the counseling list if we don't make it

I don't disagree. I value the education I received from Memphis (and my daughter is currently attending) and I've discovered that in the "real world" where you get your education isn't as important as how you apply it. That said, the perception of Memphis when it comes to academics (whether we believe it to be accurate or not) will certainly be a factor in the decision making process.

From the Feb. letter accompanying requested materials to the Big 12 expansion committee, the UofM is expected to attain R1 Carnegie classification status within 5 to 7 years. It appears as if Memphis academics and proposed progress have been discussed with them since at least Feb. It will be a factor, and they seem to be privy to future plans.

Not really fair to compare FR and SO years when most of the classes taken are the core FR and SO classes, which usually means large classes.

It seems some fans want the Big 12 thing to fail so they can be giddy about other Tiger fans supposedly losing their minds. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
Again, who wants Memphis to the B12 to fail?
Making up shtt on a message board doesn't mean one is being positive nor does it mean Memphis will get into the B12.
It just means that person is making shtt up.
Pointing that out doesn't mean anyone wants Memphis to be left out in the cold or that they are being negative.
The fact that some either trouble or pretend to trouble with this distinction means they are either not the sharpest knife OR that they already need counseling.
No in between. One or the other.
It's all bypassing the original statement which basically said some folks will need counseling if this doesn't go thru.
That's a dumb statement anyways unless everyone actually knows each other on a personal level outside this forum and is aware of their mental state.
Some fans seem to revel in the fact that others are talking shtt and these same fans then wonder what would happen to these shtt talkers if we don't get into the Big 12. The fact that this so called fans would even bring up the point that these shtt talkers will finally get their due if we don't get into the Big 12 is unfathomable.

I hope Memphis and Cincinnati get in. But the B12 teams remain splinter on their visions on what their conference should look like! It must be hard waiting for closure on this issue. Again good luck.

It's like asking the prettiest girl in school to go to prom and her saying she'll give you an answer in a couple of weeks. You try not to get your hopes up because you know she's just waiting for a better offer.
Closure one way or the other will be very welcome when it does occur.
