Teachers Leaving Kansas Or Quitting The Profession Jumps Dramatically
Teachers Leaving Kansas Or Quitting The Profession Jumps Dramatically

http://kcur.org/post/teachers-leaving-ka...y#stream/0

Quote:The report shows that 1,075 teachers left the profession last year, up from 669 four years ago. That's a 61 percent increase.

The number of teachers who are retiring has also been steadily increasing over the last four years. In 2012, 2,084 teachers retired. Last year that jumped to 2,693. Still that's a 22 percent hike.

McNiece told the board about a conversation he had with the chair of the Nebraska State Board of Education. "He wanted to say thank you to Kansas for sending so many teachers to Nebraska,” McNiece told his board colleagues. “Ouch. Big Ouch.”

The problem of teachers fleeing Kansas came to light a year ago when the Independence School District in Missouri bought two billboards touting open jobs in the district. Not only was there data on teachers leaving Kansas but data from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) that showed the number of license applications from teachers with a Kansas address had doubled since 2011.

It showed what the panel called a "greening" of the profession. Almost a quarter of all teachers in Kansas have less than four years experience and 40 percent have less than nine years in the classroom. The blue ribbon report also said that fewer students are majoring in education.

I'm sure some of our resident cons would try to spin this as a positive thing.

My wife is a teacher. You couldn't pay me enough to teach today.

The liberals want the parents to be able to walk all over you and the conservatives want to give you dumb kids and punish you for not turning them into geniuses.

Only a narrow-minded fool would think that.

My official position is this: public schools can do some great good and also be a huge waste of taxpayer money. I have seen it firsthand.

I was homeschooled along with my brothers and we all attended Christian schools. I am high honor roll at my College and my middle brother is a cadet at West Point.
We are doing pretty well without public school (a shock to many poor unfortunate souls).

And yes, I know that West Point is technically public, I am of course referring to elementary, middle and high school.

yeah. I can't imagine who in their right mind would want to major in education coming right out of high school. we need some of our talent going to that sector and yet people are being actively discouraged not to by the sad state it is in.

well when you make such a dumb comment implying self education and home schooling as the alternative to a failed public education sector how is it unreasonable think that is your stance?

So did you go to a private school or were you home schooled, or were you back and forth between the two?

It's a terrible job all around. I couldn't imagine doing it.

The kids suck, their parents suck, the people running the game suck, the test suck, the programs suck, the goals suck, the faux-accountability sucks.

Teachers have been turned into glorified babysitters.

I have said it many time on this board and I will repeat myself. There is no such thing as a decent public education in this country.

The entire system needs to be nuked and rebuilt from scratch at the local level.

My wife is a teacher. So I know. Ohhhhhh, I know.

I think these numbers are also reflective of the harsh reality that a lot of men and women think they want to teach but then get into the classroom and after a year or two think "whoa, this is not what I was expecting) and leave the profession all together. No different that a lot of us in our first jobs.

Quote:but data from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) that showed the number of license applications from teachers with a Kansas address had doubled since 2011.

What did it double from? 5 to 10? 500 to 1,000? Sort of a big data point to leave out. I understand this is just a news site and not an indepth study or report, but there is a lot of factors not explored in the link.

I think there is a lot of truth to the idea that many people going into teaching have done so with little thought. It's one of the classic fallbacks for liberal arts majors who don't know what they want to do. The turnover rate is incredible.

Hell, the same is true for lawyers.

Real Life Example

The state of NC increased the mandatory amount of school days from 180 to 185, one week.

The exam schedules did not change, so now those extra 5 days students literally sit in a classroom and watch movies.

GLORIFIED BABYSITTERS.

My mom is a teacher and she is incredibly discouraged.

but it does suggest something. FYI KS has had a terrible track record with education as of late. their public schools had to cut the year early because the state govt had a budget shortfall and no money for them to finish the year.

I'd still disagree.

I went to a public high school in a very affluent neighborhood, top 25 in the nation.

It offered an atrocious education. I was not presented with any new information in that school until my senior year. We were learning in 6th and 7th grade of my private Irish school what they were teaching sophomores and juniors in a top flight public school in the U.S.

I can also say that my wife taught at what was ranked the #1 high school in the United States and having seen what they were expecting from those kids and how things were presented that it was pathetic.

There is no 1% quality public education. It's a myth.

Rigged system against teachers

The rule says all students must take the free AP exam. Kids who take the AP exam don't have to take the final for the class. Teacher's rank and standing are dependent on AP test scores.

Kids go to AP test and sleep. They get 0s. It's the teacher's fault.

But it is unclear exactly what it suggests. I feel like the lead premise of the story is that teachers in KS are up an leaving to teach in other states. I don't think that at the end of a rigorous study that this would be a major factor in why teachers are leaving the profession in Kansas.

From my personal experience I find it doubtful that many first year, hell even any teacher, will just up and relocate to another state for another teaching role. That's an expensive proposition for a young teacher.

It could be a simple as folks in a neighboring state get paid better.

Here, in North Alabama, Tennessee teachers try constantly to get a job in Alabama because they are paid better and get better benefits.
