Trotter: There are no "locks" at this point. Anyone who tells you differently doesn't have good information. My sense is there seems to be a little more momentum for 14 than there was maybe a week ago, but it's just too soon to tell where this is headed.

Trotter: I've seen the speculation that this could turn into a reverse auction, but I really don't think that's what will happen. The Big 12 will want its new members to feel like actual members, contribute to the strength of the conference and grow their programs. Gutting their TV revenue completely would go a long way toward doing the opposite. Will the new schools have to take partial distribution for several years? Absolutely. But I've been led to believe this notion of new members getting, say, just $2 million of their $25 million for several years cut is not what the Big 12 will do. By the way, that's what makes Memphis interesting in all this. The Tigers have indicated that FedEx would be willing to cover whatever Memphis would get in partial distribution through the end of the contract, which would give the current Big 12 members extra money while still allowing Memphis to have the cash to grow. I think this could be more of an advantage for Memphis' candidacy than FedEx pledging to sponsor the title game.

Agreed. And I would hate for someone like Houston to get in over us because of crooked politics when we have much more potential as a complete athletic program than them

Pretty accurate, IMO.

Call me what you want, but anybody who tells you it's a lock at his point is flat wrong. You want to know when you're a lock? When your football team hits the field with a 'Big XII' logo sewn onto it's jersey.

This is the best point I've heard a journalist make in years. If the Big XII is going to be successful with this expansion they are going to have to look at it as investing in the program, not a short term cash gain. They need to actually build the relationship, therefore, so they need to be careful about how much they 'financial hazing' they make the new guys go through, else the newbies will be looking to leave as soon as they get there.

They have one NCAA berth since 1992 (last conference title), 2010, when they upset us and El Paso to get in as a conference seven seed.

Here are the problems with Houston:

*top 5 metro area that UT already owns. When I lived there, UH was always 3rd fiddle in college coverage behind UT and TAMU.

*basketball hasn't done anything of note since Phi Slamma Jamma

*they are another Texas team when the rest of the conference already feels the state dominates their decisions as it stands now

What Houston has going for it:

*money, including academic money from the state in excess of the pittance we get

*football playing at a very high level right now...their potential is really high, they've played at the highest levels before and will have an easier time playing there again
