I am THRILLED!!!! 02-13-banana

I just find it sad that people are so willing to chase after any tiny crumb that proves those saying we are getting invited to the Big 12 are wrong!?!!

I guess some people just have no ability to grasp that either they were wrong or that Memphis is viewed in a very positive light by some very high up people. I will attribute it to a mixture of battered fan syndrome and a heightened level of self importance. Either way, I am sure they will find other topics to complain about once we are announced!!

Actually, I take it back... I AM angry. Angry by the fact that this board, once an incredible place for like minded Tiger fans to post, share information and generally get along has become what it is today. Where the idiots are applauded for the ability to be keyboard warriors and threaten good posters, run off others and basically prove their self-ascribed dominance while having nothing useful to actually contribute to this board other than obnoxious, overused catchprhases that simply prove how intellectually vacant they really are.

Apart from that glaring issues, when it comes to Tiger sports, I am totally thrilled. I can't wait to see this team on the practice field and then in my seat at the game watching them take that next giant leap forward!!!!

Hear, hear! Well said and I totally agree. A lot of good folks got tired of the personal attacks and bullying.

Me? I now respond to those treating me rudely by simply reacting like an a--hole and then feeling bad about it later.

Why don't we just try to play nice and just root for the Tigers?

No sheet. This has been going on for over 13 years now. I'm too tired to worry about it anymore. We're totally screwed if we get left out again.

Agreed. And I would hate for someone like Houston to get in over us because of crooked politics when we have much more potential as a complete athletic program than them

Top 5 population area in the US. Larger endowments than us. More money behind them. Better basketball tradition. Do not over look what Houston has going for it.

Do they really have a better basketball tradition?

They have two runs don't they?

They have a BB tradition akin to Army's FB tradition...but not as good.

This board is the only place I have anything even remotely negative to say in regards to Tiger athletics. I haven't been this excited about the future of Memphis sports, especially football, ever!!!
Some of the things that are floating around are just amazing. Hopefully we will see soon enough.

Absolutely not. I only blame people that attack those that actually try to share information.

I am not beating my chest stating that I am an insider and know something you don't.... I am beating the drum and saying it's a great freakin' day to be a Tiger fan!!! Go buy season tickets now because sooner than later, they will be much harder to get!

I still consider the majority of people on this board to be sane, rational, Tiger fans. There are some that are way past the level of obnoxious and some that I totally question whether they want anything positive to happen to the Tiger football team. I would block them, but their post are far too entertaining.

IF the rug is pulled out from under us like it was with the Big East, then I predict there will be hell to pay and you will see the implosion of the Big 12 sooner rather than later.
I would never suggest tugging on Superman's cape, much less slapping him in the face!

Call me what you want, but anybody who tells you it's a lock at his point is flat wrong. You want to know when you're a lock? When your football team hits the field with a 'Big XII' logo sewn onto it's jersey.

(07-30-2016 02:32 PM)3601 Wrote:  Trotter: I've seen the speculation that this could turn into a reverse auction, but I really don't think that's what will happen. The Big 12 will want its new members to feel like actual members, contribute to the strength of the conference and grow their programs. Gutting their TV revenue completely would go a long way toward doing the opposite. Will the new schools have to take partial distribution for several years? Absolutely. But I've been led to believe this notion of new members getting, say, just $2 million of their $25 million for several years cut is not what the Big 12 will do. By the way, that's what makes Memphis interesting in all this. The Tigers have indicated that FedEx would be willing to cover whatever Memphis would get in partial distribution through the end of the contract, which would give the current Big 12 members extra money while still allowing Memphis to have the cash to grow. I think this could be more of an advantage for Memphis' candidacy than FedEx pledging to sponsor the title game.

This is the best point I've heard a journalist make in years. If the Big XII is going to be successful with this expansion they are going to have to look at it as investing in the program, not a short term cash gain. They need to actually build the relationship, therefore, so they need to be careful about how much they 'financial hazing' they make the new guys go through, else the newbies will be looking to leave as soon as they get there.
One point is.....I am not sure how powerful FED EX sponsoring the title game becomes. It is very important if there are no sponsors available. But, if the title game turns out to have a lot of potential sponsors....all adding FED EX does is drive up the price a little by adding a potential advertiser that is committed to buying the sponsorship. Where FED EX money commands the most power is sponsoring something that normally goes unsold. Then it is "new found" ad dollars that impact the bottom line the most.

Lol, what?

Houston is quite different than Memphis. Houston competes locally with Rice, Texas Southern and also Prairie View A&M (not that far away). Then you have pro sports, The Texans, The Rockets, The Astros and The Dynamo (pro soccer). The football stadium seats 40,000...20,000 less than the Liberty Bowl. Hofheinz Pavillion only seats about 8,500, much less than FED EX forum. I guess they could move games to the pro stadiums when it is necessary. U of H is much less of a 'brand" in Houston......kind of more akin to SMU in Dallas. To me, the effect that fans of Texas (51,000 students) and A&M (59,000 students) and their alumni have on Houston appear to be much greater than the effects of Ole Miss (23,000 students) and Tennessee (28,000 students) fans and alumni on Memphis.

You're spot on. Firstly, if the BigXII has enough corporate support for it's championship game then it may or may not be interested in the FedEx sponsorship money. I tend to believe with boosters like Red McCombs, T Boone Pickens, and others they will have enough.
Secondly, where you put the money indicates what kind of conference you want to have. If you simply want more cash from your members, then fine, FedEx will certainly help with that. But if you want equal partners, who bring their own strengths to the table along with more in-conference competition, and allow the conference to grow as a whole and not just parts, then you tell FedEx or other corporate sponsors to give that money to the school and/or athletic department to help build it up. The former is a recipe for driving off member - ala Nebraska, Colorado, A&M, and Mizzou - and the latter is a way to ACTUALLY BUILD A SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE.
