I think TCU hurts your chances.. maybe if something wild happens like the PAC picks up houston then SMU could be a partner school. Extremely unlikely, but more likely than the big 12 getting two teams outta DFW

SMU will be in a P5 in some way. Just like Tulane and more than likely together in a consolidated BIG 12. When it all shifts out and exits and entrances are made.

Will include new indoor and outdoor practice fields. The push is on.

Excellent news for SMU!! Go Stangs!!

First Observation

An outdoor football practice field, a soccer stadium, and an indoor football practice field with a track don't cost $150M.

Rather, the press release says:

"These projects constitute Phase 1 of SMU Athletics' $150 million Facilities Master Plan."

Phase 1 probably costs no more than $40M.

Second Observation

This has a deja vu feeling to me. Back when realignment talk was raging in the summer of 2010, Houston officials rushed out a press release about $160M in facility improvements to try and get some publicity (and appease the alumni).

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily...ities.aspx

In reality, it took us awhile to get all that done. By 2018, the original $160M planned improvements wiil be finished at a cost of $213M, and we will have spent another $75M on other projects.

So hang in there Mustang fans.

The $150 million is for phase 1 only. Phase 2 plans will cost an additional $60 million.

Since 2001, SMU has spent $200 million in athletic facility upgrades.

Not really rushed...this has been in the works for well over a year. Further info: Phase 2 will be $60 mil or so and will be focused on the Loyd All-Sports Center (office building/weight rooms/etc. affixed to the stadium that will be expanded) and the stadium itself.

As for what it means to conference realignment, I'll let everyone have their own conclusions. Like I said, this has been in the works for a long time. And realignment is far more likely to be decided by politics and the economic impact of adding a team in a particular area than it is to be decided by facilities improvements. With that said, hopefully this thread can be returned to discussing the impact and not turned into yet another mud-slinging unreadable realignment thread.

No. It isn't.

The press release says that the SMU Athletics' Facilities Master Plan is "a $150 million comprehensive facilities investment that will serve the needs of all 17 sports and 400-plus student-athletes."

The outdoor football practice field, soccer stadium and indoor football practice facility & track don't serve all 17 sports.

The master plan serves all 17 sports and costs $150M. The soccer stadium, track and football practice fields cost far less than $150M.

Why would SMU expand their stadium?

The Loyd All-Sports Center will be expanded. The stadium will be improved.

Of course, there are triggers that could happen that would result in a stadium expansion. Those plans have been drawn up (and will take the stadium to a capacity of 51,600...which frankly is larger than I'd ever like us to go) in case those triggers occur.

RE: SMU announces $150 million all sports facility upgrade
The non-Texas Big 12 teams are not going to consider, on top of a possible Houston bid, a 6th team from Texas, and in a market already covered by TCU, an existing member.

I'm a Tulane fan, not unbiased like any other fan, but am encouraged by the persistent media reports (SI, Austin Statesman, Charleston WV Gazette) describing Tulane as a serious, emerging dark horse candidate. These are real newspapers and magazines with real journalists and editors, not self appointed "expert" sports bloggers.

I don't see any of that about SMU anywhere reliable. I think the above reasons explain that. It isn't fair, but sometimes these things aren't fair.

Yeah it's either Houston or SMU. They're not doing both.

Push for what?

If you're referring to Big 12 expansion, under no scenario does SMU get into the Big 12. Sorry, but them's the facts. You can spend 1 Billion and won't get in.

It's either Houston or nothing. Literally.

If they expand, Houston will be included. The only way Houston is not included is if they don't expand at all.

From the article:

Phase one: The Indoor Performance Center, which will be located where the current track and soccer field sit, will feature a full-sized football field and indoor 300-meter track. The facility will also be used for campus activities and events. The outdoor football practice field, with natural grass, will be adjacent to the IPC. The new stadium for men's and women's soccer will be on Mockingbird Lane, site of the current football practice field. Those projects will cost about $50 million.

So,

Phase 1: $50M
Phase 2: $60M
Phase 3: $40M
Total: $150M

Looking at your picture of the basketball stadium, I'm seriously thinking of going up there and watch a good ol' UH vs SMU game. Kind of regretting not having it on my to do list.
