Well, the "old" Southern Miss is long gone, forever...Now, it doesn't mean we can't be a force to reckon with again, but all the old variables that made the "old" Southern Miss have gone the way of the dinosaur.
For example, we were practically the #3 recruiter in Alabama 20 years ago...but we now just form a line in the back like the other 100 Div I schools that recruit Alabama. John Smith of Louisville once stated (and I paraphrase) he started recruiting all the small rural Alabama high schools as USM, and each time he went there, the H.S. corch or superintendent (many times a USM graduate) would say "USM has already been recruiting the kid for over a year, so 'good luck'".
However, social media; football camps; increased Alabama recruitment by schools such as Louisville, West Virginia, Cinci, Tulane, etc.; USM's three year doldrum; and the addition of new Div. I schools such as Troy, UAB, USA, MTSU and WKU have severely diluted the 80-90 Div I prospects Alabama produces each year.
As for the state of Mississippi, Old Mrs.' and MSUcks' recent successes has hurt USM's recruiting (some folks are even saying the Bulldogs are now getting the "best of the rest" players USM used to get, a theory I'm not so sure I subscribe to), along with this fact: who CAN compete with all that SEC TV money?
OK, I'll stop now when I could actually write a book (because those are NOT nearly all the factors keeping us from becoming the Southern Miss of "old")....
I just hope our "resurgance" (in a watered down league) keeps upticking this year....and perhaps USM can somehow, some way become the "darlin's of Dixie" once again.
WKU has hit Alabama hard here the last few seasons....Our safety Marcus Ward has started all 4 years is from Alabama and currently we have 10 players from Alabama on the roster....
Yep....the states of Kentucky and Arkansas (and even Tennessee in some respects) have always had subpar H.S. football (compared to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida), and the Univ Of Arkansas has long invaded Texas for talent.
Not only does the state of Alabama have at least 80-100 Div I prospects each year, most graduate H.S., which is a recurring problem for Mississippi's 50 or so Div I prospects. (On a side note, I believe the state of North Dakota had ONE Div I prospect a few years ago...and Boise's roster is full of Californians and Left Coasters since Idaho is known for potatoes, not football players)
opportunity....that's the key....
just think how they will view if Hop can continue the miracle comeback that Monk created in 3 short years...
talent in the south is everywhere.....
developing the schema in hierarchy is the key....
the biggest change due to realignment is that the g5 will now have a turnover rate that cannot be controlled unless the HC is satisfied with less (money)
this is where the community backing/institutional marketing group becomes very important in the rural areas....
the g5ers in the urban centers are just screwed in that schema (yeah, I had to use it twice)

Re: Looks like USM has taken a step backwards once again in scheduling...
Seems like it was in the 80's that Soithern Miss was the first team to beat both Auburn and Alabama in the same year in about 50 years.
This is a reality for all of us. When a school can sell out 90 thousand at a home game they still make more money by paying us 1.5 mil why go one the road. This has nothing to do with TV deals or even conference deals.
I can remenber Miss State selling a home game to Florida several years ago. It was called a "neutral site" game because it was in orlando.
For southern, auburn is not that far, a good big game, good exposure , good money and historically winnable.
Its a win for southern. Kick their ass and make them pay you for the honor. Hopefully it will be win for the AAC by then.

only one of two teams to ever to beat the bear in tusca during his reign....
it's where the NastyBunch came from....,Carmody was one mean ol' cuss that was a typical hardarse football coach (which was normal back in that day).....and where Reggie truly achieved greatness.....
was my jr. year in HS......
sooooooo many memories over the decades.....I can only wish to never forget those days and hope we get a few more of those as I get closer to the dirt.....

Kinda interesting how many folks are remembering and/or wishing USM would return to the good ol' days, when so many fans didn't consider them days "the good ol' days"!
Not long ago USM and Fresno were considered the darlin's of what was once called MID-MAJORS, my have the mighty fallen.
To see schools with NO football pedigree such as Rutgers, Temple, UCONN, S. Florida and UCF, (who either languished for years in football obscurity or were newbies annointed simply because they were in so-called "desirable" TV markets), give us the proverbial finger is particularly galling.

What's not to love?...a series (22 games) dating back to the 1940's...a great SEC gameday environment that will be a TV game AND easily within driving distance...plus the large payday...a great deal indeed

That was Favre's Sr year, 1990. We gave louisville their only loss in their fiesta bowl year. Missed fg's on the last plays of the game that would have beaten ms state and Georgia. Yes first non sec team to beat them both at their place in the same year since the very early 1900's. Only sec team to do that in the same year was lsu in the 70's.
we also beat auburn the next year. bowers first year.

Looks like USM has taken a step backwards once again in scheduling...
Well, I enjoy those games with JSU and Alcorn..I'd rather play them instead of Austin Peay or another school like that. I mean, you can always look forward to a great band performance from JSU or Alcorn....especially JSU. And both programs bring lots of fans and they are both respectable and both programs have polite fans eager to have fun and excitement. It also helps keep money inside of state.

I have zero problem with scheduling one of those teams every year....
as I've stated too many times....

You must have forgot what happened after the game when JSU was here last time. That cost us money even though it never made it to court.

Agree about Alcorn. Great fans. Had an experience with some JSU fans that was not good.

Was not at the JSU game but have heard the horror stories. Keep them off the schedule. MVSU would not bring a crowd. Alcorn has great fans and has a solid following.
Cycle the FCS game between Alcorn/some MEAC school/lower level Southland.
