The usual suspects, although i might swap GSU for UCONN. Not to discredit what GSU has done, i would just personally bet on UCONN in a head to head. Also remember this list does not factor in attendance or other factors, i believe this list is solely based on "on the field" performance.

Also not sure if these schools are ranked in a particular order or just listed.

I wouldn't. You underestimate the culture at Georgia Southern. You either win or your gone. They've had two losing seasons since restarting their program in the early 80's and they had a new coach the year after each.

If we're talking about next year, my money's on UConn. If we're talking the last 5 years, GSU hands down.
I wouldn't. Southern has always had the ability and willingness to punch above their weight and do it well.

A lot of schools can make that same claim. Boise St, ECU, NIU, Marshall, USM, etc.

RE: G5 schools that could compete immediately in a P5 conference
We all disagree on who who compete as a P5 right away. Many schools can claim that from the G5, FCS and even some D2 schools are calibre enough to beat a P5 school. North Alabama could beat Kansas any day of the week.

Northwest:
UNR
BYU
Portland State (Colorado)
Boise State
Eastern Washington
Weber State

Southwest:
San Diego State
Fresno State
Cal-Poly or Cal-Davis beat one of the PAC 12 California schools while moving up from D2.
Sacramento State (Colorado)
Hawaii
UNLV
Northern Arizona (never beat a P5, but lost a few times close upsets over Arizona State and Arizona)

Rocky Mountain:
Colorado State (Colorado a lot)
Air Force (almost knock off Oklahoma a few years ago in Norman)
New Mexico
UTEP (almost knocked off Oklahoma in El Paso a few years ago)

South Plains:
SMU
Arkansas State
Houston
Texas State (almost knocked off Texas A&M in a rain storm if I remember right) Was on ESPN 2. Was a game between a P5 vs an FCS school at the time.
Central Arkansas (kept pace with Oklahoma State last year)
La. Tech (almost knocked of LSU)
UTSA (almost beat Arizona twice)
McNeese State (almost beat Nebraska 2 years ago)
La.-Lafayette
La.-Monroe

North Plains:
Montana State
Northern Iowa (beat Iowa State a few times, and almost knocked off Iowa.)
North Dakota State (scalped Minnesota, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State, scalped Oklahoma in the men's basketball tournament)
Montana
South Dakota State

Midwest:
Cincinnati
Northern Illinois
Central Michigan
Western Kentucky
Toledo
Western Michigan
Bowling Green
Youngstown State
Illinois State
Miami
Ball State
Ohio U.
Indiana State
Akron

Southeast:
Memphis
Southern Mississippi
East Carolina
UCF
Jacksonville State
Appalachian State
South Alabama
Georgia Southern
USF
Middle Tennessee State
Florida A&M almost beat Miami Florida
Furman
UAB
Troy

Northeast:
Temple
Marshall
Navy
New Hampshire
Villanova
Delaware
William and Mary
Old Dominion
UConn.
UMass (almost beat Michigan and Vanderbilt)
Towson
Fordham
Maine
Army beat Duke
James Madison

All you have to do is pick the best teams from this list to create a P6 conference. North Dakota State should be in the discussions since they have knocked off the Big 12 schools big time.

RE: G5 schools that could compete immediately in a P5 conference
If the Big 12 is trying to gain stability, they should add BYU, Colorado State, Cincinnati & Houston. They would be in 3 times zones, a travel pack in the Mountain time zone and a travel pack in the Eastern time zone. If they eventually get poached they'd still be a strong conference and they'll be good across the board in all sports, but the leaders are being stubborn about the money. Texas Tech I see why they would vote with Texas cause they can hitch a ride with them to another conference, TCU not so much but Texas is the one that helped them get into the Big 12 so they have that loyalty. So it's trying to convince TCU or Texas Tech to vote against Texas right now and that's most likely the hard part.

Well now that's just an elitist thing to say...

Fun fact, did you know NIU is undefeated against Alabama? Even when the game was in your house, Michael "the burner" Turner torched the Crimson Tide in their own home to pull off one of the biggest upsets in college football history =)

It's not quite the SEC, but NIU is 4-4 against the Big 10 in the last 6 years, 5-6 against P5 in general in OOC games. And every game was a road game for NIU except one home game against Kansas (well, a couple games were at Soldier Field). I'd say that's competing. They'd struggle with teams like OSU and Michigan State, but so does the rest of the conference. Although they only lost by 7 to OSU last year.

If Georgia Southern and UCONN played each other this year UCONN wouldn't keep it within two TDs. GS is coming off of another 9 win season in which they DESTROYED the 10-win MAC Champions (Bowling Green) in the GoDaddy Bowl and are returning the majority of the pieces. GS lead the nation in rushing while our very own Matt Breida led all RBs in yards per carry (nope, not Dalvin Cook). UCONN squeaked by Army last year...c'mon.

That is tough to sustain as you said with these games on the road.

Ohio's idea of just playing 1 P5 money game a year, limits P5 exposure but limits the number of P5 losses.

In 4 seasons you go 4-4 vs. P5 that is 4 seasons where you pick up a loss.

In 4 seasons you go 2-2 vs. P5 thist 2 losses to the P5 in 4 seasons. Two less seasons spoiled by a P5 loss.

And less recognition by the talking heads. Most of them remember upsets, not games they expect you to lose (most P5vsG5 games)
