RE: WKU Basketball in Final Two for 2 Five-Stars & a Four-Star
You are not betting the health of your program. If you are guaranteed $700,000/year (or any amount of NCAA Units) for the next 6 years, why the heck wouldn't you offer the coach some of that money to stick around?

Oh, you mean after a F4? Getting the horses before the cart...lets get to a sweet 16 first. That will be a milestone our coach has never reached.
I'm talking about paying a coach after he gets a ncaa win with a build in frontcourt that will be tops in this conference. Yes guards win in the NCAA but a damn good frontcourt gets you to that next level in the tourney when you got a couple good guards.
Just like in life...
if you can't afford to replace it, it's probably a good ideal not to buy something. Just as SIU found out and like I'm sure some on this board in every day life. I hope Western never has to find out.
No coach that can demand 1.5 million up is going to sign a large buyout if he wants to take another job...
unless he gets a large buyout in return...if he's let go.
Western's President went on record and said...
not making the NCAA Tourney in 3 years is not good enough at Western. Stansbury has 6 in 14 seasons with a built in advantage of playing in the SEC where middle of the road schools usually gets ncaa bids. But that 6 out of 14 is borderline to not being good enough for Western.
I will wait for the F4 run before I jump on the 1.5 million bandwagon. But not anything less. But then again it's not up to me.

Since we are taking ncaa units how does CUSA split those units? 50% for the conference and 50% for the school that earns them? That's how the SBC did it.

Young guns has always had that outlook on a coach. It's just how the sheriff looks at athletics. I would much rather pay a coach after he shows what he can do then let him walk. Is Wichita state dumb for giving their coach an asinine amount of money after his success?

Probably. I think the A10 is 60/40 or maybe even 70/30. I wish we would adopt a model where the participants keep most of the money.

75/25: http://richmondbizsense.com/2014/03/21/m...get-fuzzy/
I'm a big fan of the eat-what-you-kill model, though I'm guessing Fordham and Duquesne are less warm to it.

75/25 is awesome and the way it should be.
Gives each school even more incentive to improve their own basketball program.

RE: WKU Basketball in Final Two for 2 Five-Stars & a Four-Star
Wichita state isn't supporting 2 major programs and not only that they have major support even when they weren't winning...
I just picked a year to look at attendance numbers and I'm sure I can do this for just about any year in the last 20
Wichita St coming off a 17-17 record averaged 10,333 fans the following year (2010)
Western coming off a 25-9 season back to back NCAA Tourney bids going to a sweet 16 and a last second shot away from another... averaged 4,461 the following year (2010)
At $17 a ticket Wichita St made 2,986,237 (minus any for students)
At $17 a ticket Western made 1,289,229 (minus any for students)
Us Western fans love to brag about our history (I'm one of them) and it's a history not matched by many. But one thing Western fans have never did or at least not since espn got up and running about the last 25 years...support the program
Yes I know all we have to do is win...WRONG. Winning has made little difference less than 1500 fans in most years from last years attendance.
In those 25 years Western went to 10 NCAA Tourneys
In those 25 years 16 of those were 20+ wins
In those 25 years 5 losing seasons with 4 of those 2 games or less under .500
A new coach will not change that...not one making 500,000 or one making 1.5 million
Going to the NCAA tourney will not change that...proof in the numbers
Winning 24+ games will not change that coming off back to back to back NCAA Tourneys and being ranked in the top 20 2 of those three years with 24,28,24 wins ....
Western averaged 5,372 the following season. About 1300 more than last year
2003 after back to back NCAA Tourneys and with a preseason All American center and a hometown hero, in turd turd ...Western averaged 5,473
Wichita St in 2003 (18-12) averaged 8,190 coming off of 15-15 (2002-8,399), 9-19 (2001-8,114), 12-17 (2000-7,393), 13-17 (1999-7,358)
Wichita St is a basketball school when it comes to fans putting their money where their mouth is. Western was a basketball school 30 years ago and paying a coach 1.5 million will not change that. Will Western see a bump in attendance...sure will but not enough to support that type of money.

We won't sell out every game this season, but if we find a way to land those three guys! I think we sell out just about every game going forward

I think we will. There is a difference in playing Troy and uab, odu. When odu was top 25 two years ago the place was packed. I bet attendance will get good quick (if we win) and if it doesn't he doesn't get a bump in his compensation package

Exciting stuff Toppers. It'd be impressive as hell to land these players.

I'm torn here.
1) Good for a conference mate to pull in top players. Also bad though for my school.
2) Stansbury was on my short list for Charlotte's job
3) Common sense says he has to be cheating
4) However, after watching schools like UNC cheat like hell and get away with it... why the hell not?
5) Part of me says: be wary though WKU, NCAA would like nothing better than to make you an example after they failed to punish UNC.

If by cheating you mean he was his recruiter at TA&M and hiring his godfather as an assistant coach. If that gets us the number 1 center in nation I'll take it every time.

not cheating just playing the system.
First there is Malik Newman...Stansbury coached his father at Mississippi St. His father is very very involved in the decision making. They want a place where Malik can go and shine and where a coach will play him as a PG so that he can go to the NBA. Something Ben Howland didn't do a lot of at Miss St last year.
Second is Mitchell Robinson. Stansbury was his lead recruiter that cause him to sign with Texas A&M. After Stansbury left A&M for the WKU job, Robinson decommitted a couple weeks later. Stansbury then went after him and to help try and seal the deal to get him. Stansbury hired his godfather as an assistant coach who also just happened to be a former UNC player.
Then there is the Galen Alexander kid. He is from Louisiana like Robinson. I am sure Robinson was in his ear and was like man lets go to WKU with Malik Newman and tear it up. We are basically trying to steal LSU's top 2 recruits.

This is not bad for any other school in CUSA. This would be a great thing for the entire conference imo.
It has already brought a lot of attention to WKU and CUSA.

Agree. Getting big time players to come to CUSA, and more importantly, win and go to the NBA, is nothing but good for the league.
We need recruits to understand that if you are talented, you can go anywhere and make it to the league.
