All of the candidates are pretty equal mid-FBS football programs. None are part of the elite.

Why not just go then with the 2 schools that have the best academics, BYU and UConn? They are also 2 of the schools with the most solid athletic brands.

Cincinnati, Houston, Colorado State, South Florida all have good enough academics for the B12.

There is nothing wrong with being a "city" school as long as the research profile is high enough.

Colorado State gets play but the state of Colorado isn't a strong college athletics state.

Colorado is struggling as a P5. I think it makes more sense to go back into a state where plenty of success is already happening. Colorado State has been mediocre as a G5 so it doesn't look like they can handle the B12.

Cincinnati and South Florida are better in that they've been in the Top 5 within the last decade and are in strong athletic states. Houston is in that mold and may be able to get in with Texas expansion support.

BYU they might perceive to have a ceiling as a mormon school.

UConn they might have concerns about their football program being strong enough for the B12. They seem more like an ACC football program. if the idea is to attract Florida State at one point, UConn football is definitely not the way to do it.

Texas may demand Houston as a condition of expansion. That would live Cincinnati and South Florida. Cincinnati is more neutral than USF who a Florida State might perceive as a step down.

Houston/Cincinnati might be the most conservative way to go.

None.

B12: Houston, Cincinnati

AAC
I: SMU, Tulsa, Memphis, Tulane, Navy
II: UConn, Temple, ECU, USF, UCF

Split the dollars less ways for a higher per school share.

Boise State is 1-0 against the Big 12. Sadly, these writers are behind on who is hot. Boren mentioned no schools get in with sucky product. That gives Boise State be ahead of these higher academic schools. Plus, I read Boise State is adding more majors in research sciences. That means by the time the next release by Carnegie, they could be level 2.

Boise State isn't only lacking academics but it doesn't have a sizable TV market.

B12 wants both, the academics and the TV market. No recruiting base either. Idaho moving down to FCS helps in that regard.

Actually the last program Boren spoke of publicly supporting was Cincinnati. I believe he also supports Memphis. From what I have read I believe those two will be asked to join The Big 12.

Both make geographical sense. Presently WVU is 862 miles away from its closest conference mate. Adding Cincinnati alone solves that problem but creates another by putting another program on an island with WVU. Memphis would bridge the distance between present Big 12 programs in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas with Cincinnati and West Virginia.

Memphis is almost halfway between Dallas and Cincinnati. Memphis is also only 389 miles from the geographical center of The Big 12.

Cincinnati and Memphis solve a lot of problems for The Big 12

They're just filling dead time. The B12 won't be expanding for a few years.

Can't ESPN cancel the TV contract if Houston or I think UConn leave?
