I pretty much nailed the 4 permanent rivals, 8 game schedule years ago. Problem is, Big 10 blocked us.

For real, there is no logical reason behind enforcing divisions, especially ones that don't consider geography, rivalries, or competitive balance.

There's a reason why basketball moved away from divisions. It's time for football to catch up.

PRO: (1) it IS geographical; (2) it only requires ONE protected crossover game (UNC/NC State); (3) It keeps Duke/UNC/UVa together.

I like this. And I like the creative way you treated the geographical terms.

If schools balk, heck, 'Atlantic' and 'Coastal' are still out there as terms. I'm OK with that.

My first choice remains that divisionless arrangement mentioned above. Each school has 3 protected regional rivals and rotates through the rest of the conference every two years.

That idea has much to recommend it. You get more conference cohesion and more appealing games for TV... which is no doubt why Jim Delany maneuvered to block it at the NCAA level. We may yet see something like it emerge, though. In time.

The biggest question with that divisionless format is how to determine the two teams who play in the CCG. One option I like is to let the playoff committee choose those teams, either directly or indirectly.

I don't think that it would be that bad, even if we got Pitt, Syracuse & BC as our 3 rivals. The other 5 games would consist of Clemson, Miami & VT one year & then FSU & GT the next.

Example:
Pitt, Syracuse, BC with Clemson, Miami, VT, NC St, WF

Pitt, Syracuse, BC with FSU, GT, NC, Duke, Virginia

Not a bad rotation & you play everyone twice in 4 years.

Question....do you really want to give up annual games with Clemson and FSU...For me giving up Clemson is a Non Starter...FSU can be replaced with Miami...

How about:

Division A
Clemson
Duke
North Carolina
NC State
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

Division B
Boston College
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Louisville
Miami
Pittsburgh
Syracuse

I think an alignment like this preserves the most rivalries.

EAST........................SOUTH
Boston College..........Louisville
Syracuse..................Clemson
Pittsburgh................Ga Tech
Duke.......................Wake Forest
UNC.........................NC State
Virginia....................Florida St
Va Tech....................Miami

This list doesn't necessarily reflect cross over/rivals.

I like Marks divisions the best. You play 2 cross-division games. You can designate one of them as permanent if you wish. The NC teams are split but I think that is the only way to go. That is probably an issue for UNC as they want to play both WF and NCSU.

I'm ok with the Atlantic and Coastal names in this scenario. The East division would be the Atlantic (mid/north Atlantic). The South division would be the Coastal (south east).

To Lou's point, if playing games in Florida is critical to your recruiting, there are other teams you can schedule between FSU and Miami games. There is FIU, FAU, USF, UCF, and I think there is a team in Gainesville?

No, I don't want to give up Clemson. FSU & Miami are interchangeable. What I would want in this scenario would be to have Clemson, VT & either Pitt or Syracuse as our 3 rivals & alternate between FSU & Miami.

Clemson, VT, Syracuse with FSU, GT, NC, WF & Virginia

Clemson, VT, Syracuse with Miami, Pittsburgh, NC State, Duke & BC

I'd be fine with this. Question is, would NC State roll with it?
Balance is not bad, either: Pitt/UL/VT/Miami vs. CU/GT/FSU, with an occasional appearance by someone else.

If Wake is agreeable for "settling" for that schedule (plus 2 of the other 7 every year, which could be worked out to guarantee at least one in state game most years) then I say do it!

8 game schedule. One move would make both Divisions stronger and provide more tier 1 content.

VT/Uva
Clem/FSU
NCST/UNC
WF/Duke
Cuse/Pitt
BC/GT
UofL/Miami

I would hate not playing FSU every year and I'm sure GT would hate not playing Clemson every year but imo, this alignment provides the best tier 1 and tier 2 football games
