I'm frankly sick of these games. Nothing personal against either school. Can't we play some old CAA rivals? Even if we have to pay more. I think the days of selling out MEAC teams are coming to an end. Fans are getting more sophisticated. Knowing we have future home dates with teams like V-Tech, UVA and WF. Norfolk state and Hampton just doesn't do it any more. Am I alone in this feeling? I bet not.

I'd much rather play JMU, W&M, Richmond or even Liberty than NSU or HU.

I like playing Norfolk State. We have to mix in winnable games when scheduling tough ACC schools. Playing Norfolk State is a good gesture.

I don't mind playing Norfolk State every now and again because it's a nice event for the city. But that is for basketball only, and football less frequently than basketball

I made this argument months ago. Good to know other fans see these schools as uninteresting opponents.

RE: I don't want to play Norfolk State or Hampton any more
I don't see anything wrong with playing them. I agree playing them every year isn't as cool, but it's nothing to really get in a tizzy over. I do like that we get to play the local teams, helps dissuade the "too scared to play us" angle, and I think helps make ODU more of the hometown team. We've got Albany and VMI scheduled in 2017 and 18, so at least that'll be different.

Someone before made the point that W&M, JMU, UR and others can get a better payday playing NC State, UNC, and UVA respectively than what we can offer. What'll probably happen is that we'll play an old CAA rival once every couple of years filled in with HU, NSU, VMI, etc.

RE: I don't want to play Norfolk State or Hampton any more
You guys have to understand that playing JMU, Richmond and William & Mary isn't as easy as waving a check in their direction and having them load up the trucks and hit 64 East.

Richmond has an ACC game scheduled for every season until 2021. William and Mary last played a non-P5 FBS opponent in 2005. JMU did play Akron in 2013 and SMU last season, and will play ECU in 2017, but generally they're going for bigger paychecks than ODU will probably be willing to pay. And accepting a buy game would be galling for them, given that 10 years ago they harbored FBS dreams while ODU didn't even have a program.

So get used to Norfolk State/Hampton/VMI as the FCS game for the foreseeable future, except for the one season when Albany comes in.

Some aren't going to get used to it. They'll just stay home. As ticket prices rise, ODU is going to have to sell products fans want to buy. A Norfolk State/Hampton game on opening day is like playing a bad movie . No one wants to pay to watch a bad movie.

It's an FCS body bag game. FCS games aren't intended to get FBS fans excited. And at some point, even the Virginia CAA schools aren't interesting to play. William & Mary and Richmond aren't rivals for ODU anymore, at least in football, because they play in a lower level and almost assuredly will for a long time. Reliving the CAA isn't a good reason in and of itself to schedule them -- and even it it was, both those schools have longstanding agreements with P5 schools for tomato can games, and ODU isn't matching Virginia Tech, UVa or Pitt for their next opening, which is sometime in the 2020s.

JMU I still expect to see in FBS eventually, so I don't anticipate playing them until that happens. Plus they get more high-profile FBS games usually (Akron and SMU excepted).

Are you kidding me? Whether it's today or decades down the road, a game against our former state rivals would garner tremendous interest from our fans and theirs.

Look, these 2 teams play in the 11th ranked FCS conference in the nation and there's 13 in all. Our fans deserve better and the team deserves a better challenge.

I doubt we can increase our payments to FCS foes while working on stadium funding. So for the next 5 years at a minimum expect to see teams at lower level conferences than CAA teams. But geez at least get anyone higher than a MEAC Team.

Hey, if it's a guaranteed win against a state team we're looking for, there's always UVA.

Towson, Liberty, Richmond, Citadel, Villanova would all be much more exciting than a steady diet of NSU, Hampton, & VMI. But if we can get those three to take a paycheck that is half as much then i guess its worth it. Those games will likely sell out on paper anyway.

Right, it's called the FBS schedule.

ODU plays William and Mary every season in basketball, but even with the Tribe holding their own, you'd be hard-pressed to call it a rivalry. Why would that suddenly change in football, when W&M is playing in a lower division with fewer scholarships?

And the NSU games certainly generate a lot of interest when they happen. ODU and NSU signed a long-term contract before ODU moved up.

FCS games at this level are for (theoretically) easy wins in the early season. And if you're going to play those kind of games, it makes economic and community sense to play them against teams with local ties. If ODU needs FCS opponents to generate interest in their games, then ODU has no business being in this level, and if CAA games are what gets your blood going, then I guess watch highlights of the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

And again, it's a moot point anyway. Even if they had room in the schedule (they don't, unless they feel like playing two FBS schools in a season) Richmond and W&M aren't going to take a pay cut in their guarantee game to go to ODU. JMU won't do it either. So if you're looking for an FCS date from the region, it's going to be VMI, Liberty and the MEAC schools.

Towson and Villanova don't do much for me now that they're not in ODU's conference. Really, the three Virginia schools are the only ones from the CAA that I care to bring in, and for various reasons, that's not happening for a long time, if at all. The rest of the CAA's appeal almost completely vaporized once ODU left.

The Citadel would probably win with that ******* triple-option. They almost did in 2013. Which is the other thing people tend to forget; ODU is still a young FBS program -- the last thing they need is to pay FCS teams that can beat them.

I do wonder why ODU isn't bringing Liberty in. Liberty's playing two FBS schools this season (Va. Tech and SMU), so they're not above doing that. If this year is an aberration and they'll stick to playing one FBS game a year, then their next open slot is 2019, according to this.
