I was always at Peabody Place because I couldn't stand Wolfchase (still don't really like it), and my dad played at Blues City Cafe so I would ride down and back with him. As the recession ramped up, stores started to close...by the time it was officially declared a 'recession' the damage was done, and THEN that element started moving in...they smelled the blood in the water, and I'll agree it sped up the death of PP...but the recession was the cause of death.

The recession "started" to really hit in late 2008.

nope...technically the 'great recession' started in late 2007 (see reference)...but it's not like November 2007 everything was sunshine and rainbows, then on Dec 1 2007 everything fell apart...as I said, the buildup started in 2006.

Quote:According to the US National Bureau of Economic Research (the official arbiter of US recessions) the recession, as experienced in that country, began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009

Yeah. Even by late 2007 the vast majority of "stuff" was gone from the mall. But the tangible impact occurred in the late part of 08.

Regardless, there would have been no reason whatsoever for kids to START loitering at a place that had no businesses in them. So, the idea that AFTER the recession (post late 2007/early 2008) the kids THEN ruined the mall is illogical.

but they still had Jillians/Primetime, and half the movie theater...that's more than enough...go bowl, drink, and watch a movie all in one place.

I was there, and you won't change my mind, or the facts.

So Jillians was there (accessible from the outside) and a half used movie theater that would be around for another 6 months. Oh, and a couple kiosks that sold Elvis coffe mugs.

And you contend that is when the kids started to congregate at the mall and then put the final nails in the PP coffin?

C'mon Spock, that's just not logical.

Why would kids BEGIN to congregate at a place where there were no stores? Jillians costs money, so they can't loiter INSIDE it.

Plus, what people were the kids going to run off at that point? There were no stores and (again) Jillians was accessible from 2nd and Gayoso, so one didn't need to even go in the mall to get to the store.

I know you don't like facts and all but:

http://www.commercialappeal.com/entertai...80231.html

"Despite all the community outreach, discouraging words were quickly heard. In a Feb. 11, 2003, story in The Commercial Appeal, reporter Linda A. Moore wrote: "Unruly teenagers and children are keeping some adults away from a jewel of downtown's revitalization efort. Adults complain and some teens admit that loud talking, yelling and food fights are commonplace in the auditoriums of Muvico's Peabody Place 22.

"The complaints go beyond the theater to Peabody Place, the shopping and entertainment center that the 22-screen cinema dominates? Although most teens who crowd the mall on weekends are well behaved, few are buying, and their numbers drive away the adults who do, merchants and mall visitors said....

...Whether such reports were exaggerated or fueled by racism (with "unruly" being essentially a code word for "black," when applied to downtown youth), Muvico was abandoned by many adult customers. (Parking also was an issue, with the Peabody Place multi-level garages less appealing than the free open parking lots outside of Malco theaters.)

Peabody Place was caught in a paradox. When Belz Enterprises tried to address negative perceptions by instituting a "dress code" and "conduct code" for Peabody Place patrons in March of 2003, the company only reinforced the idea that those offended by "excessively baggy" clothing and baseball caps "worn sideways, backwards or upside down" (to cite two of the dress code's prohibitions) and by "disorderly" and "disruptive" behavior should find somewhere else to spend their money."

Jeezus dude.

You already assent that "that element" came in and "smelled blood in the water" and the loitering behavior put the nail in the coffin for PP. You held that it was at the end of PP's run (post 2007).

Other's contended the loitering issue predated the recession and the article cited above seems to indicate there were already issues with youth behavior and perception that kept away consumers and hurt businesses as early as February 2003.

I'm a freaking liberal, I don't hate anybody. I support Target's bathroom policy, I think gays should be able to marry, I think the police officers in the Freddy Gray and Walter Scott cases should be prosecuted and convicted, I think too many minorities are locked up for non-violent drug offenses, etc, etc...

So much hate...

Clearly this guy is just trolling. Shame on me for engaging.

On the enclosed mall topic. If you are not an A level mall (regional and high-end draw) you are dying for the most part if you are an enclosed mall. We are overbuilt retail speaking at the moment.
