OT but former Rice recruit Stone Garrett injured his hand as the victim of some sort of prank involving a knife: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/182424552/...=151437456

21 Pitches through two innings.

I don't think you can take him out unless we score like 10 runs this inning.

What exactly is the ground rule? I presume it's something like "If a batted ball does under that bench over there, it's a double", but is it something unusual?
And how does it specifically favor the home team?

Read Eric's Day 3 write up, George. He even has a photo of the ground rules. He points out that the reason (a reason...) that Warren went under the bench is that the first base ump didn't signal that the ball was out of play. Warren probably thought that if the ump ain't signalling, I've got to keep on playing.

That was what shocked me about the over turn.

Warren CLEARLY indicated for a few seconds that he wasn't going to field the ball when he raised his hands. I assume that one of the umps did not make a call, so what is he supposed to do, sit there doing nothing while LSU is aggressively running around the bases, hoping that the umps decide after a long while to call the play dead? As soon as a ball gets kicked under that bench and does not roll on its own, it should immediately be called dead, regardless of what the fielder does.

I can't understand how the fielder trying to retrieve the ball benefits anyone but the hitting team.

Yes, he's supposed to do nothing and wait for the umpire to come out. If the ball is clearly out of play, the runners will be sent back. You can't just have fielders suspending the play on their own any time by raising their hands, nor can you expect umpires to make that call from 90+ feet away or to cover 90+ feet in a matter of seconds.

As someone who has reffed and played sports, I disagree with your last comment - especially since the ruling requires one player in to game (the defense) to act in a way that can significantly hurt their team (by not taking action). The officials know the quirks of the park and should always be prepared to make a call quickly, especially when it involves something as unique as getting stuck under a bench (which must happen fairly regularly given that it is in the home rules).

I think Warren had his arms raised for a good few seconds, and as soon as they were raised, the official responsible for that call needed to be making a bee-line to the area to determine whether it is a ground rule double. I did NOT see that happen when I watched the replays. The umpires should not force a player to, in essence, give up on a play for an extended period of time when the result of that action could significantly alter the outcome of the game.

Warren acted correctly as soon as he saw the ball roll under the bench, and he continued to act correctly for the amount of time it should take an official to make a decision about whether the ball should be ruled out of play. If I try to bring this situation into say, soccer, it would be like forcing the defender to, as soon as they think the ball goes out of play, to stop playing, regardless of what the referee says, but allowing the offender to continue to play. That makes no sense, whatsoever.

I guess my biggest gripe is that this stupid rule requires the defender to go against their instincts while the offensive player gets to play the ball as if it were live.

Don't shoot the messenger. More rain headed towards Baton Rouge (maybe) from the north. It could miss the city to the east though.

"I recall a certain Rice coach bringing in the closer in non-typical situations."

I view this as a virtue, and not a vice.

The umpire can't stop play and send players back until he confirms the ball was dead. However, the umpire can acknowledge he saw the player signal that the ball should be ruled dead. That can be done almost instantaneously. I don't think that happened.

Just saw a retweet from Kendall Rogers that Arizona's starter has thrown 82 pitches today ... after throwing 96 Friday night (two days rest). Yikes.

Doing an excellent job of just hitting the ball up the middle. Not trying to do to much with the pitches.

Gotta head off to a swim meet. Keep it going Owls. Ride Salinas all the way to anyone who suggests otherwise. He's already pitched too many pitches to count on him too much in another regional game. And no rain!

Take out Salinas now, if you think he could pitch effectively tomorrow after pitching 3 innings today. You can have an ERA of 9.00 for the rest of the game, not score again, and still win. Having a top line pitcher for 1 of your 2 games for LSU seems like by far your best shot. Yes, I know we could lose this game, but if we cannot hold a 7 run lead for 6 innings, we have no business moving on, anyway.

If you watch the replay, for some reason the first base umpire had his back to the play of action and was running back toward the first base bag as the ball went down into the bullpen area. Then you see him running out there.

Why is Russell Brand pitching for SE LA?
