What exactly is the ground rule? I presume it's something like "If a batted ball does under that bench over there, it's a double", but is it something unusual?
And how does it specifically favor the home team?

Read Eric's Day 3 write up, George. He even has a photo of the ground rules. He points out that the reason (a reason...) that Warren went under the bench is that the first base ump didn't signal that the ball was out of play. Warren probably thought that if the ump ain't signalling, I've got to keep on playing.

That was what shocked me about the over turn.

Warren CLEARLY indicated for a few seconds that he wasn't going to field the ball when he raised his hands. I assume that one of the umps did not make a call, so what is he supposed to do, sit there doing nothing while LSU is aggressively running around the bases, hoping that the umps decide after a long while to call the play dead? As soon as a ball gets kicked under that bench and does not roll on its own, it should immediately be called dead, regardless of what the fielder does.

I can't understand how the fielder trying to retrieve the ball benefits anyone but the hitting team.

Yes, he's supposed to do nothing and wait for the umpire to come out. If the ball is clearly out of play, the runners will be sent back. You can't just have fielders suspending the play on their own any time by raising their hands, nor can you expect umpires to make that call from 90+ feet away or to cover 90+ feet in a matter of seconds.

Gray singles Proctor to 2nd w 1 out. This pitcher's stuff isn't great. Like it was said already, let him get behind in the lineup and throw strikes.

"...probably the best looking freshman we've had in several years (maybe back to Rendon?) "

Well, if his career ends up like Rendon's did, that will end well for Rice. That 1331 OPS for Rendon his sophomore year was pretty amazing to watch.

Make Cedetol throw strikes. If he does it is batting practice.

Walk to Lewis. Bases loaded. SE Louisiana already has someone warming up in the pen (a bit surprising - he's not missing by much).

ETA - Granier is warming up - he's their closer but hasn't pitched in the regional yet.

Awesome hit for Chandler - that's the way to get out of a slump.

Wow Granier already coming in. He's only pitched 35 innings on the year (21 appearances). I can't imagine he's gone past 2 or 3 innings in a game this season.

Well, it is safe to say that the SE Louisiana coach knows what a high-leverage situation is. If this inning gets further out of control, it may be too great a deficit for SE Louisiana to come back from, so you might as well use your guy who is most likely to stop the bleeding, right now.

Another big hit! 4-0!!!!

Double play ends the inning but Warren hit that one hard too. Great start. Salinas needs a shutdown inning now.

if we go up 6-0, the aggressive move would be to pull Salinas and have him go tonight or tomorrow...

likely not happening, but would be a nice luxury

If that's the rule, that's the rule, but it takes a lot of faith in the umpire to make the correct call and I'd say it goes against what most athletes are taught to do (i.e. "play to the whistle" in football).

I recall a certain Rice coach bringing in the closer in non-typical situations.
