According to my wife..who is in public health..this pest is not like the common ones we see in the evenings that swarm on us. This specie bites all day. Be sure to dump out any standing water around your home and you should be fine. This pest mostly breeds out of stagnant water...tires..ect.

Just what I want to hear living next to a flood plain that is just now starting to dry out from October.

Well, it's obvious Obummer doesn't care. If he did he would have used some of those "Unallocated funds" lying around in Washington to help. Instead he spent it overseas on something else.............that's the response you were looking for - no?

Well if Obama doesn't care, how are republicans going to respond? They are the champions of the unborn afterall.

Obama is currently in charge, and has money at his disposal to deal with it. Funny how even the biggest liberals come running to the conservatives for help with any crisis, cause they know OBlunder and his minions cant and wont do sh*t.

Anyone that thinks that the government has any ability to control mosquitoes from biting people is delusional. Spraying has been shown to be minimally effective and is mostly a waste of money. The best thing one can do is make sure no standing water is around your home and if there is?...treat it. There are chemical "donuts" that can be tossed in to kill these pests before they hatch. If your wife is pregnant? Take the necessary precautions of covering up skin and wearing an insect repellent with "deet" in it while outside in areas where mosquitoes are active. Just use some common sense and everything will be fine.

I read up on the species of mosquito that carries the zika virus and others. Only female mosquitoes bite since they lay eggs. Male mosquitoes don't bite. Just thought it was interesting.

Good thing, because those things are large.

Eastern NC, hot and humid weather, living on a waterfront farm... Mosquitoes are massive in late July and August. Most well over the size of a nickel and some over the size of a quarter

Yep I grew up in eastern NC so know all about them. The ones in VA are about the same. I'm considering using one of those "Mosquito Squad" like companies this summer not due to Zika but because my daughter looks like she's gone a round with Mike Tyson after a couple mosquito bites.

Isn't that why they use badminton rackets in the b-rated science fiction movies? So you can swat 'em away?

These are so satisfying. I don't think I"m doing much towards the mosquito population but it's a lot of fun.

I'm still fan of the bug zappers folks used to have back in the day. Don't see those around much these days.

I hope that I get a bonus for this free add I'm giving you guys. Avon sells this product, "Skin So Soft" and it does wonders for mosquito bites. Sunday we were at my SIL's house playing cards and she was attacked by them. She had huge welts on her legs and upper arm. She spritzed the lotion on her affected areas really well and she didn't get anymore itching and the welts went away. It's also good for preventing skeeter bites before they happen. I'm not charging Avon for this free advertisement just trying to help you guys who live in the south.

RE: 2 Million Pregnant Women Potentially at Risk for Zika
We're expecting our second in August but honestly Zika is pretty low down on our concerns. As far as I know there's no evidence that the virus has entered the mosquito population in the States. Yet. And my wife's already in the third trimester and from what I've read the risk for birth defects occurs when the disease is contracted earlier in the pregnancy. Not that there couldn't be other risks.

It's pretty scary though and I'm all for tax money being spent on research.
