Lacrosse!
Saw a tweet earlier from US Lacrosse that shows the national participation numbers for the sport (at an organized level: pros down to the youth level. Not rec leagues or anything). Lacrosse has continued to grow and has now reached 800,000 players. Despite the hindrance at the collegiate level, lacrosse continues to grow.

http://www.uslacrosse.org/multimedia-cen...00000.aspx

This sport is my favorite sport. I absolutely love it. To play, to teach it, talk it and watch it. 800,000 players probably seems low, but its the continued and constant growth that makes me overjoyed. The more people I can share this amazing American game with, the better.

Sure, im not betting on a lot of attention for this thread, but i just wanted to share this new little stat with you guys, and possibly answer any questions anyone may have regarding lacrosse.

(TBH I'm not expertly versed in the womens version of the game, however.) Also, shout out if youre a fellow lacrosse player!

Ohio has a pro team:

Maybe they could schedule some games at Nippert!

RE: Lacrosse!
My oldest was big into LAX and I fell in love with the sport as well. We attended the NCAA Final Four several times, a great event where they bring in the finalists for DI, DII and DIII and determine their champions over 2 days. I love the hitting, constant movement and pace of the game. LAX is growing while baseball is shrinking.

I'm interested in the context of your comment about hindrance at the collegiate level. I worked at the University of Denver for seven years (just prior to Bill Tierney being hired), and loved watching the sport. Obviously, they broke through and became the first national champion west of the Alleghenys last year. This year, four "western" teams - Marquette, ND, Denver, and Air Force made the NCAA field. It seems like the sport is enjoying healthy growth in the NCAA, but maybe the growth isn't keeping up with the massive participation on the youth level?

In my opinion, Title IX has drastically slowed the growth of the college game. Its been awhile since ive spoken about this topic, so forgive me if I don't articulate this as well as I used to. But due to football taking up so many of the mens scholarships, and no female equivalent to it, many schools have only been able to add the womens lax teams. Schools like UC, Florida, Louisville etc. Which is still fantastic, as growth is growth, but I feel the mens side has been slowed

Now, dont get me wrong, Title IX has done amazing things for womens athletics and still has its positives, but i see counting football against the mens scholarship counts, is a flaw. There is no female equivalent for football to even it out. Which is kind of the point of Title IX, but it still irks me some to see mens lacrosse growing slower than the rest of the sport.

Thats the gist anyway. I used to have a whole essay on this that goes far more in depth, but its been years. Theres still things like school budgets, and cutting other mens sports to make it work (e.g. Syracuse not having baseball), but im not going to go searching for it.

Good thoughts - that makes sense. Yeah, there's long been talk about schools and conferences out here on the west coast (primarily Pac-12 and WCC) adding men's lacrosse, but Title IX is often cited as a barrier.

I played for one of the better high school programs in Ohio, and as much as I love the sport, its not the most spectator friendly on T.V.. I always felt that was one reason why the sport is slow to grow at the higher levels.

Utah is the first Pac-12 school to add varsity lacrosse, and is only the third school west of the Mississippi, joining Denver and Air Force. Don't care about Utah as a school, but this is a big moment in the growth of the game.

The article has some interesting info as to Utah's road to getting to this point.

RE: Lacrosse!
Some interesting sh!t going on in the world of professional lacrosse. So the MLL, Major League Lacrosse (field lacrosse), has been around since 2001 or so and has seen varying degrees of success. Expansions and contractions, TV deals or lack thereof. But it's been around. There is also the NLL, which is the indoor (box lacrosse) league, it plays in a different season than the MLL and as such the leagues share numerous players. For the purpose of this post, the NLL isn't really relevant.

A number of top tier players in the MLL were growing tired of the leagues stagnation and lack of vision. There's more that goes into it (low pay, no healthcare, etc.) but we aren't going to dig that deep in this post. So anyway, these players have broken away from the MLL and have started their own league, the Premier Lacrosse League. The PLL has signed a big time TV deal with NBC (relative to lacrosse) and stolen a large chunk of the MLL talent. Still some strong talent in the MLL but the PLL took a ton of guys away. The first ever professional lacrosse game on a major broadcast network was today on NBC. The production on all the game's broadcasts for the PLL have been incredible and the social media content has been next level. On field interviews, mic'd up huddles, skycams, numerous camera angles, you name it. Like this: https://twitter.com/SInow/status/1137793...97153?s=19

The PLL is a traveling league with six teams, playing in major venues in major markets. The MLL is your traditional league with six teams each in their own city. The PLL modified the rules a bit, they shortened their field a touch and instituted a shorter shot clock. This has led to an extremely fast paced version of the game. In all honesty, this has been some of the most impressive and intense games of lacrosse I've seen at any level.

Here are this weeks (Week 2) highlights for the PLL:

Whipsnakes vs Chrome: https://youtu.be/tsjMTARMSVk

Archers vs Redwoods: https://youtu.be/CsszGFh9dws

Atlas vs Chaos: https://youtu.be/BiQow8lrpqg

A video covering the first weeks action: https://youtu.be/DKogdbzRFdY
‐---------------------------------
For the MLL, they aren't as good about posting highlight videos, but their lack of a TV deal allows for all their games to be archived here: https://www.laxsportsnetwork.com/mll

So no highlights this week yet, but free full games if interested.

I'm not sure if the PLL will be successful, but so far they are killing it, at least in the hearts and minds. I'm skeptical of some of their business decisions, but the on field and over the air product is spectacular. And props to the MLL for surviving a mutiny like this and still plugging ahead.

The Ohio Machine was one of the causalities of the fall out. That's a shame as their attendance had been in the top 6 and they were one of the few with their own stadium. The MLL changed the rules where each owner could only own one team. The Machines owner owned four and had to drop three.

The MLL, while stagnant and low paying from the players view, had a proven business model. The PLL is a gamble that might cause both leagues to fail. All that cutting edge production adds cost which has to be recovered to break even. From what I understand the PLL tv deal is ad sharing not defined dollars. The question is how long their investors allow them to burn cash without a return on investment if these numbers don't improve. The numbers for the PLL first week, in person attendance and paid viewership, hasn't been great. You would have thought early attendance would be high just because of the curiosity factor. I also wonder how well they will be able to sustain the interest for in person crowds without a home team.
