Memphis the Next Hot Southern City (Travel & Leisure)
And a great place for Big 12 football AND basketball
If I learned anything about Memphis in the years since attending college there, it was that the city was famously unchanging. Known almost exclusively for fall-off-the-bone ribs and smoky blues clubs on Beale Street, the Tennessee river city was like a time warp. This theory fell apart on my most recent visit, when Memphis felt undeniably different. The city hit a significant turning point in 2009 …

RE: Memphis the Next Hot Southern City (Travel & Leisure)
The other day I heard an interesting comment from Andy Cates. He actually went to school at the University of Texas and he referenced the "Keep Austin Weird" slogan.
That slogan was first coined in 2000 and was described by its originator as, "A small attempt to counter Austin's descent into rampant commercialism and over-development."
Cates pointed out that, sadly to many, Austin is no longer that weird. The city has actually been largely taken over by rampant commercialism and over-development. You can't say the same about Memphis. We're still weird...and that's not a bad thing.

While what's been done with formerly decayed old commercial districts like South Main and Broad St is great, there's really nothing "weird" or "funky" or particularly Memphis about boutiques, art galleries, and coffee houses.
If anything it's pretty generic stuff in that article, complete with a pic of a generic hipster.
But like I said, it's far better than nothing.

That's just because development in Memphis is little to none.

Lived in Austin for 10 years starting in 2004. Austin outside the box that MoPac, 35, Ben White, and 183 make, the city has always been fairly normal. There were always neighborhoods that made Austin weird(Oltorf, SoCo, South Lamar, Allendale, North Loop, the Drag, E. 6th, Riverside, Warehouse District, etc). One by one, each of those neighborhoods has been gentrified and condo-ized. The individuality of each neighborhood has been made into a fetish but those people and businesses that made it that way have been priced out.

Part of his point is that we want Memphis to continue to grow and develop, but we don't want to lose what makes us special.
South Main has coffee shops and art galleries, but it also has Ernestine & Hazel's. Hopefully there can be a happy medium.
Some would argue that Overton Square and Broad Street are too gentrified, but some would still consider them funky.
Places like Alex's Tavern, the P&H, Lamplighter, Black Lodge Video, Zinnie's, Wild Bill's, Cash Savers, Raiford's, Overton Park, Cozy Corner, Payne's, are funky.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. The main focus of his talk was a rundown of the $5 Billion (with a B) in recent and current development in Memphis. That figure did not include the $1.3 Billion expansion that St. Jude has committed to in Downtown Memphis.
We know where you stand on this subject. You just hate any positive news. Weren't you the dummy that shat all over the Sears Crosstown project and said it wasn't going to get financed? My understanding is that it opens in a few months.

The last time you posted you were wrong about Central Station (see link below). If you quit posting then you won't have to worry about always looking stupid.

Unless they get a handle on crime, Memphis will never achieve the status it deserves.

The change in Austin has really accelerated over the past two or three years

He/she has been asked before, but he/she is too ashamed to admit where he/she lives. He/she prefers to make dumb comments from an undisclosed city.
