I pretty much agree with this. Unless Illinois is surprisingly good this year, you should expect a MAC champion beating them, even in Champaign. It'd be roughly like us going to Ohio (in a nice year) in non-conf, IMO, as a litmus test. Again, it's a litmus test.
I'm still bummed Cubit isn't coaching there. Gawd that would have been awesome.

Quote:vs Western Michigan (61st best team in the nation), 3:00 PM kickoff, ESPNNews
Watch out -- the Broncos will be sneaky good. Another afternoon kickoff and a third consecutive home game will be a nice way to start the year for Illinois, but they can't look ahead to the beginning of Big Ten play if they want to escape Lovie's 'Welcome to Champaign' campaign with multiple victories. Western Michigan, who are actually ranked fourteen spots ahead of the Illini in the FPI index, are led by P.J. Fleck. Fleck was a name that surfaced after Cubit was fired as having interest in the Illinois job but nothing solid ever materialized. WMU boasts quarterback Zach Terrell, who threw for over 3,500 yards last season. On the other side of the ball, the Broncos have a strong secondary with safety Asantay Brown and cornerback Darius Phillips, both experienced upperclassmen who ranked in the top of the MAC in tackles. This is going to be a close game and if you go to sleep on Western Michigan they can spring the upset, but Wes Lunt always seems to drum up fourth quarter magic in non-conference home games. He'll do it again versus the Broncos and the Illini will pull out a narrow WIN.

RE: Illinois
Might be but I would think NW's LB Anthony Walker will be the best defensive player we'll see.

As much as this game doesn't mean anything in the MAC race it means a whole lot in terms of the "Bronco culture" If the Broncos are who they say they are they should beat Illinois .Time to show WMU is big time elite! The three stars must perform as three stars! The coaches gotta get the boys ready to perform and come home to Kazoo with a victory and charge the Illinois folk double if they want Bells!!!!!!!

RE: Illinois
I pretty much agree with the combo of the 3 dinosaurs on our game. Could be a yep -- WMU wins, could be an Illini solid win, or an Illini barely holds on by a FG or less.
That's as far as expectations are concerned, right now.
But let's see their strengths & weaknesses against Murray State (strengths will probably be over inflated), and UNC.

RE: Illinois
Illinois doesn't scare me. With all the off-field drama...new coaching staff, players leaving the program...and the question marks all over the depth chart, this is a game that we absolutely should/must win. If Coach Fleck and Co are to ever take the next step, we need to beat mediocre teams like this. CBS preseason rankings have them at 106 in the country. Our Broncos are at 48. Northwestern is at 38. NU is the team we should be competing with.
I know it's never easy to go into a Big 10 stadium and walk away with a win, but if we're projecting a toss-up game against Illinois this year...we really haven't come that far as a program after all. We beat a much better Illinois team back in 2008. No reason we can't do the same this year.

RE: Illinois
If we play ball and have a legit replacement for Braverman.. I see this game looking very similar to our bowl game... With us stretching it out on the ground as the game goes on.. Just a feeling.
