My first thought was maybe he found out Philip Nelson was going to be the starter, but the article states that that decision hasn't been made yet. Crazy. Perhaps personality conflict with the new staff?

This is a huge blow. If anything for depth, that's one reason I wasn't happy to hear about Blake Kemp leaving. Suddenly we are one injury away from either Summers or true Freshman Herring playing.

Whelp, Ruff's last year will be similar in one aspect to Mo's first year.

If Ruff was still at ECU, Benkert would still be at ECU and the season would look better.

These are the problems that usually arise when staff changes come about. It's a commitment to sacrificing (in most instances) a year at least. Hopefully the gamble yields the desired results.

So what does this mean for you guys? Was he going to be your starter?

Nelson and Benkert were neck and neck in Spring camp (I did think Benkert had more upside). This isn't quite like last year with Kemp as I think Nelson is a large step up from Kemp who was limited with down field throws. The issue is if Nelson goes down we are down to essentially a true Freshman or Summers from last year. We did offer a JC QB today who hopefully will sign for depth.

They may be saying that publicly but my guess is Nelson was "privately" named starter. I don't think you go through spring camp and then ultimately decide to transfer right afterwards unless you were told you were number 2.

I hope you are trying to be sarcastic, but I doubt it. Otherwise...

The graduates with 2 year of play left. It makes sense. There will be a school with a graduate program ECU doesn't have that coincidentally has a QB problem. He can transfer and be the unquestionable starter. If he thinks he has a shot at making it in the NFL he needs to be the man these last 2 years.

What about Jacobs as the backup?
