After a few late decommits, transfers and injuries it has left us pretty thin. I also think it gave these QB recruits the assumption that at some point they would be "the guy" and when they weren't they've moved on. We are already seeing with this recruiting cycle that Coach Mo is going after multiple QB's but it's most likely going to take some time for them to develop. That's why I hope we get that JC QB to help bridge the gap and provide much needed depth. It is a plus that he has 3 years of eligibility as well.

Spot on! Always recruit multiple players in a position.

Ya it is better to have multiple players at one position and increase the chance they pan out. Rather than go all in on a single player and look like a moron.

So...uh...WHY did Keith transfer, and WHY was our best option a last-minute JUCO QB? And at that, WHY was Keith our backup QB?? It seems clear he probably was not good enough to start at this level.

Keith transferred to UNC Charlotte & didn't' win the starting job there either - that should tell you something.

That's my point

Well the reality is as a coaching staff you are going to miss on a recruit from time to time. The problem is if you only recruit 1 per class it leaves you virtually no room for error. It looks like not only did we whiff on Keith but also on Jacobs who I've been told isn't a viable option for us at QB. As important as the QB position is I personally wouldn't mind signing at least 2 each recruiting period or at least every other year to ensure adequate depth.

Yeah we need 6-10 scholarship QBs at all times and NO Walkons!

Philip Nelson – SR – 6’1” 213lbs (Presumed starter)
Former Minnesota starting QB – Transferred to ECU

Reid Herring – FR – 6’3” 180lbs
Offers: ECU, Miami (FL), Boston College

John Jacobs – FR (RS) – 6’2” 200lbs
Offers: ECU, Arkansas State, Troy, UAB
*Received ZERO reps in Spring Game – reportedly unhappy and looking to transfer. Word is that the staff has no faith in his arm, and he doesn’t have the tools to switch positions.

Jason Connella - SO – 5’11” 200lbs (Walk-On)

Ray Smith – SO – 6’1” 187 (Walk-On)

Also - we are the favorites to sign a late addition:

Gardner Minshew – 6’2” 215lbs (JUCO – has 4 years to play 3)
Offers: ECU, Southern Miss, FAMU, SEMO, UT-Martin
*He threw for 3,288 yards and 28 touchdowns last season as a freshman.

Nelson
Minshew
Herring (Will likely redshirt)

Then 2017 season Minshew will likely start before Herring wins out his junior year.

Would it make more sense to move the Summers kid back to QB as your back up?

At least you know what you have with him, he’s game tested and gives you some versatility with his legs.

Just a suggestion.

There is no "hype" surrounding Nelson. He is just the projected starter and has been which is why Benkert is transferring.

Just to point out that if Jacobs can't play...then that is on Ruff and his staff.

In reality this shouldn't be THAT big a deal...but if Jacobs can't play...it is a big deal.

Nelson is the starter...he's there one year. Jacobs is supposed to be the backup as a RS Freshmen...and then the true freshmen is supposed to redshirt. You can go out and get a JUCO kid to make up for a transfer, but its harder to make up for a recruiting miss that is sitting on your roster.

RE: Kurt Benkert LEAVING ECU!
It looks good on paper but the reality is you really can’t sign more than 1 quality QB per year. It makes it look to the kid and his family like you’re not really committed to him. Other coaches will be playing that card against you constantly in recruiting battles and you won't hold onto them in the long run.

For the 2016 class Temple had the Aaron kid signed, a 3 star QB from California, as soon as the Elite 11 kid Russo decommitted from Rutgers and choose Temple Aaron flipped to San Jose State, you can’t blame the kid. It’s almost impossible to land 2 quality QB’s from the same class.

If you recruit 1 quality QB a year with a redshirt year you really can have 5 QB’s on your roster at all times, should be enough room for a whiff or 2.

He was in competition with Philip Nelson (former Minnesota starting QB) for the job. Neck and neck, but many thought Benkert had a leg up on Nelson.

Shouldn't be a drop-off from Benkert to Nelson.

If we don't land that JUCO kid then we will probably have to. Of course that still doesn't help the long term problem because Summers is also a senior. The JUCO kid though is probably just a right handed Kemp. Not real big, not athletic, and doesn't appear to have a very strong arm.

Besides the Temple game I only watched bits and pieces of ECU games last season but even with that said the Summers kid scared me a lot more than Kemp did. I felt like Summers had the chance to turn a broken play into a 40 yard gain at any time.

The Kemp kid was an accurate passer and I can easily be wrong but I never got the feeling he could throw it further than 25 yards in the air with any zip.

Hopefully one of the freshman can pan out for next season and Nelson can survive the season with no major time off because of injury.

That's because he couldn't. Yes Summers does have that ability, but he lacks the ability to throw or read a defense at all.

RE: Kurt Benkert LEAVING ECU!
Problem with summers was that he knew he had the potential to rip off that 45 yard run just as much as you did and would always try to force it to happen. He never looked past his first read and if that wasn't available he'd just tuck the ball and run it. VTech kind of got blind sided by it but once defenses knew earlier in the season he was too easy to play against.

I'd be happy if we just kept it college sports related. There's an off topic forum at the top, yet somehow there are threads on the front page about Prince dying, Chyna dying, professional soccer, etc.

Why aren't those posted in off topic instead?

You can't take away the soccer thread, it's the only thing that kept me sane during basketball season.

It looks like Ruff really is going to be ECU's Jeff Bower... Benkert rejoins McNeill at UVA.

I suspect Ruff got the ECU QB he wanted. And the hits keep coming...
