The trustees have no choice but to dismantle the program. There's no justification to losing that much money.

We've been seeing this for years. They finally are beginning to see it themselves.

Stop non conference home games. Four guarantee games on the road.
If no one is there why schedule home games

Do we really have the two schools with the worst attendance in the country? Terrible. Every time I go to BSU they have way more than 7,000. If they got all the tailgaters into the stands they'd have 20,000.

Then they need to do something different. Certainly it will involve involve the MAC. That's where the "We are taking a new path" letter will go. If this isn't a great example off modern American thinking. If someone else is paying for it, we can keep on wasting the money. This is not justifiable. I might feel different if I was an EMU fan. If I knew any, I would ask them.

I remember when D1 university of Dayton could only draw a average of 10,000 at best/per game, before deciding to get wit of scholarship football and drop down to DIII. Since that time UD has had a very good program at that level, plus the fact they sport a winning tradition now.

I'd rather watch a good HS FB game than UD FB.

Dayton is not Division III in football. They are non-scholarship Division I which used to be called Division I-AAA. They are technically FCS with no auto bid to playoffs.

eastern used to be really good in track, really good in baseball, really good in mens basketball, and has also had some good years of women's basketball. football failures, on the field, for the university's athletic culture and financially have wrecked their overall athletic program and support. football is the fall sport. it's the freshman's first time to go to the big game. it's at the start of the school year. if you make football your biggest budget sport (by far) and your football team is terrible for 25 years in a row, it erodes support for sports in general on many levels. if emu eliminated football, they could properly support the rest of their athletic programs and redirect student and fan attention on better teams. division 1 football is a beast.

How much did it cost when EMU's bubble actually did bursted last year???
I know quite a few alums and students and they never have been to a sporting event at EMU.... When I say to them that they have to host the tailgate party this fall, they roll their eyes and say they won't be there. They travel 7 miles over to the golf course in Ann Arbor and tailgate with the UM fans instead of their own school.
The men's BB team rarely draws over 1,000 unless Toledo is visiting.....

Tailgate even if they're not going to the UM game? What kind of life would that be to always wanna-be?
I can understand going to an occasional other game, rooting for the "state" team for a different experience but to put the bandwagon above things I can actually connect to? Makes no sense to me.

Dear pono,
Eastern is good at track, cross country, swimming, gymnastics, to name a few. You aren't the only one piling on here, but it easy to do when one's school has not been successful in football. The turn around in football is coming. It may take a few more years, but it is going to happen.

Not piling on here or anything, I wish only the best and that the people of Ypsi get a clue but did you read that article? EMU may not even be given a chance to float that ship. You're in the dole HUGE.

RE: Eastern Michigan: Football is draining the pot.
It was a large mistake by the MAC to retain EMU, not because of the play on the field, but because they don't bring to the conference a large fan base, a stellar academic reputation or a different media market, or big dollars to spend on sports. They compete directly with UM, UT and to an extent BGSU for fans, $ and everything else, and are losing that battle.
It's probably too late to fix now, but the MAC would have been much better off to drop EMU, 1 of either KSU or Akron (because they also overlap markets too much) and perhaps BGSU, and then court a few schools from Kentucky, Tennessee and maybe an additional one from Indiana or Illinois. Even holding on to Marshall would have been better. That would have added greatly to the media footprint and actually bring in additional fans which would have allowed more $ in better media deals. Unfortunately all the teams that fit that bill have been snatched up by other conferences.

Well to be fair, they did drop down to DIII for a number of years. Move back to DI happened later.
