I noticed that he was surprised to see a gray uniform. Can't blame him - how would any outsuider possibly know our colors are blue & gray when half of our fans don't. Sunday, one of our fans, (bless his heart) at the baseball game stood up and got the crowd chanting "Blue.....White.....Blue....White.....".

Damn, I would like to see blue & gray warm-ups. If Kentucky can, why can't we? It pisses me off, by the way, that Calipari's team wears more gray at Kentucky that he did here.

I wondering if there's an old crotchety UK fan that is whining about "Calipari Gray" and calling himself "White Avenger" ?

LOL...now that was funny right there!

RE: New Basketball Uniforms
I think our basketball uniforms are fine. Good color combos and I love the throwbacks.

Wouldn't mind the team exclusively wearing penny shoes though ...

Our current uniforms are so weird. The stripes on the side of the shorts are so high school looking. We have never had a consistent uniform style in football or basketball. Can this be explained?

No, actually, Wayne Yates, who succeeded Bartow, changed the uniforms to say "MEMPHIS STATE" and replaced red trim with silver gray. I still have the letter which he sent me saying I would be happy with the improvement. Blue & Gray basketball jerseys bearing "MEMPHIS STATE" continued to be worn until Calipari came along.

Don't even get me started - our brand is ridiculous. No consistency ... looks very B-league across football/baseball/basketball.

I was responding to Bluto's post about the 80's Keith Lee jerseys that have "Memphis State" on the front. I guess I should've quoted it to prevent the confusion.

It's so annoying to me ...

The 'Memphis' font on the basketball, baseball, and football jerseys are all different fonts.

Basketball uses a plain block M logo, baseball uses the leaping Tiger, and football has basically moved to a Cincy Bengals helmet. No logo to be found when they go that route ...

I don't get caught up on color scheme, but our logos need to be more consistent across all sports. From the script/logo on the uniforms, hats, field/court, coaches polo, etc.

It varies from sport to sport for pretty much all Universities. It is really not a big deal...

Maybe a little bit ... baseball teams tend to have different logos on their hats sometimes. But the brand integrity across the board is usually better than what we have.

It's not a BIG DEAL, but it does look B-league.

For instance, look at what tennessee, arkansas, north carolina, baylor have done in recent years...

It is not B-league, like say 90-95% of schools vary quite a bit between sports. Even one of your examples, Arkansas, their baseball team wears cream home uniforms with only an "A" on them that is a totally different script from the anything you will see with their basketball or football teams. The "A" actually looks a lot like the one associated with Alabama actually. Baylor basketball wears highlighter yellow jerseys while their football team has gold chrome helmets with black "BU".

This. UTK, Baylor both have varying unis, color schemes, with/without logos. Nothing B league about it. Some don't like it - some do. Players love it. Apparel companies drive it.

You sure about that? The name change occurred long before Cal. I don't remember us wearing MSU stuff more than maybe 1-2 years after the name change.

That Arkansas A font has been around since I was a kid, it was my Dad's favorite hat. My sister has it now.

They took "State" off immediately. Finch, Price (and Jones) all wore "Memphis" uniforms.

1994 was a long time ago.

It's been the University of Memphis since the summer of that year.

I stand corrected - the jerseys did change with the name change, not with Calipari. Compare, however, the beauty of the blue (and gray) on Vaughn's jersey, above, with the ugly lighter shade of blue (and lack of gray) which began with Calipari and Nike.
