I got an email outlining stops in Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio May 10-12. Houston TBA.

Bailiff, Rhoades, Langley, and Karlgaard.

The FW meeting has conflicting addresses, though, so I will wait until they clarify before making my reservation.

Joe T Garcias is the location that I heard for Ft Worth. I'd really like to go and I plan to RSVP later this week.

When I went to the online reservations a different venue was listed.

Wherever it is, I plan to go. See you there.

Reminder that sign up deadline for Ft Worth event is tomorrow. You do not have to register but is 10 bucks cheaper if you do. Hopefully this time the number of attendees will be greater than the number of Rice staff present.

when I have gone before, the coaches have been very noncommittal to specific questions. But PM me some questions you would like presented to them, in order of importance to you (I may get to ask only one or two), and I will see what I can do.

This is the first time I have had basketball coaches there, I believe.

RE: Coaches Caravan
Back from the Caravan. Probably 45-50 people there, including a significant number of former players. Chase Clement, Brent Scott, James Hairston, others.

All of the Rice people were impressive. Nobody shooting a line of rah rah bull, but all positive.

Bailiff - said the only good thing about failure (yes, that's the word he used) is that it makes you reevaluate everything, and so there were going to be changes on offense, defense, and special teams. He said there were changes in the way plays were going to be signaled in that would cut the time in half, reducing the early time outs and delay penalties.

Rhoades - this is the one I talked to a lot. Says between returning players, freshmen, and walk ons, he will have 16 players reporting. This will enable:
1. better practices, and
2. he can play his style every minute of every game, and intends to. he said they would be pressing as they got off the bus.

Langley - talked about about the two players from Pepperdine, and the recruit with only one season of basketball. Said the latter could grab the rim.

Karlgaard. Talked a bit about facilities. Goals seem to be conference championships - win those and the rest will come. Said we need to be prepared to take advantage of opportunities.

Thanks for the report.

Glad to see (in what year 10?) that Bailiff realized there was a problem signalling in plays.

Curious if anyone asked Rhoades if he had a timetable for announcing a new ass't coach.

My impression from all of them was that they were not just saying the right things, but saying what they thought. Very much a no-BS feel to the whole evening.

I left there feeling more optimistic than when I arrived.

He wasn't asked. I mentioned the loss of the assistant, but he didn't talk about any prospects he might be looking at.

All the coaches and JK were very close-mouthed about details, and IMO properly so.

Football - Southern Miss the team to beat in west. Schedule highlights: @WKU, Baylor, @Stanford. All the freshmen who were pressed into action on defense are now sophomores and expected to perform better. Brian Patterson Center already helping recruiting.

Men's BB - Jackson coming back as team captain, has bulked up +25 lbs since arriving on campus. Teams we played last year were not ready for the uptempo/pressure style when we went to it. UAB and ODU will be top contenders.

Women's BB- Our matchup early last year against Texas showed our competitive fire, despite being physically outmatched. Big group of freshman and transfers coming in next year. Year three (2017-18) is where we expect to really see the major strides.

Program- changing the culture of Rice Athletics is a recurring theme. The kids are students first and want to come to Rice because it's a special, unique place. Keeping former coaches and players engaged in the program helps keep all alumni want to remain involved with athletics even after graduation.

Well-presented event and I felt proud of my University and our athletic programs.

RE: Coaches Caravan
Asked about student attendance, JK said it was rising in all sports every year, but the difference between 800 and 1200 students in a 50K stadium is hard to see. Said when Wisconsin gets 20% of the student body to a game, that is 10,000, when we get 20%, that is 720. Said the reconstituted Rally Club was helping.
