This does work both ways. We got a P5 grad, I think, last year.
I think most of our fans do wish him well. I expect him to have a great year at NCSU. I haven't heard many say otherwise.
I agree that It certainly works both ways. We have had a few graduate transfers. I think the timing is what concerns me the most, I just hope our coaches were aware of this before spring practice in order to help develop a capable replacement or make plans. Most graduate transfers that go from P5 to G5 are not affecting the teams they are leaving, this one will really hurt us this year.

I would really hope your coaches planned on not having someone back after graduation. I honestly don't know any numbers, but I would guess most either leave or at least drop playing to focus on school. Either way they are not on the team.

This rule helps G5 schools more than P5 schools I think. Thus far it has mostly helped USA. If this trend continues the end result will be that G5 coaches will be less likely to redshirt players. But grad transfers always find a major not offered at the previous school... It's the name of the game. I don't have a problem with him completing his degree and choosing to go to another institution. I wish he stayed, but can't fault him for leaving.

His father, Chris Scelfo, has coached with at least one member of the NC State staff in the past, probably more since he has been around the college and NFL game for a number of years.
State graduated their center and two other starters on the OL, so I'm sure Joe Scelfo has an excellent opportunity to start in 2016.

But is that really the graduate program he wanted or one he picked that allows him to transfer.

When it gets down to it, that's nobody's biz but the transfer's. Certainly it's none of mine, although I also share *some* level of curiosity as well.

My daughter (non-athlete) hated to leave A-State. She did very well, they loved her. They had her graduate program and there was a slot.
But she left anyway because, at least in her field, it looked better on the CV to go to a new lab and succeed, work with new advisors, network with different people, operate under a different set of regulations, etc.
Not saying thats the case here, but sometimes there are more considerations than just wanting to stay.
