11: UConn
17: Arkansas
19: Tenn
20: Alabama
23: Northwestern (?!?!?)
24: Dayton
30: Penn State (?!?!?!?)
40: VCU
43: Auburn
46: UNLV
"Brewer analyzed each program’s revenues and expenses and made cash-flow adjustments, risk assessments and growth projections to calculate what a college team would be worth on the open market, if it could be bought and sold like a professional franchise."
I'm guessing that cash flow, lack of growth, and an anchor contract may have hurt Memphis.

This is totally ridiculous. If Pastner's contract is not an anchor then Brewer is insane.

How is South Florida worth twice as much as us? They give them the highest value of any team in the state of Florida. Plus they have Texas A&M in the B12. Is this some sort of April Fool's article?

Maybe includes their recent payment from the AAC teams (to former Big East schools), plus Forbes must take in some account the arena (hence why cinci is lower), and/or $$ from women's programs too?
Not sure...
No clue what UL did to lose $60 Million plus in value in just 1 year...especially since they sellout every game.

If Memphis was a publicly traded company, I'm sure someone would see a depressed asset and buy it. But Memphis does have a real cash flow challenge, give that attendance is now less than half what it was even a couple years ago. It doesn't own the real estate it plays in. And the cost of increasing attendance appears to be $10 million +.

That analysis was done a few years back as well. We were much higher. Someone search the archives. It's in there somewhere.

i agree, basically
a) we have a high level of fixed costs, making our breakeven point higher which is doubly negatively impacted by our decreased ticket sales
b) we have declining cash inflow from operations which is a factor into this dudes DCF valuation - plus no telling what he's probably projecting as a growth rate, so our true valuation may be less or more than his final number just based on how bad it may actually get

Because the University chooses to hide all our basketball revenue for some reason. would be in top 10 in 2013.

Memphis is worth more than Cincinnati --- East Carolina is worth more than Notre Dame .

Very, very silly. Typical computerized formulation without any common sense at all - for an industry driven by fanaticism. A picture a guy on a computer who has never raised his head to actually watch a game.
I went to a Penn State game a few years back. Anyone thinking that program is the 30th most valuable in the country, doesn't get it.

You're exactly right in the sense that it's a statistical analysis, without any assessment of how fanatical the fans are or what that potential might mean if the team's fortunes change.
But it does give you an idea of the damage being done to the program right now in cold dollars, and why it is so difficult to turn things around at this point.
