Changing Landscape of TV w/Aresco Quotes
http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/c...er-premium

Quote:After that, the next major conference with a negotiating window is the American Athletic Conference, which includes the University of Houston. That league's deal expires with the 2019-20 season, and commissioner Aresco, a former CBS Sports executive, said he expects negotiations to begin in the latter part of 2018.

"Fortunately, their product has been better than people thought it would be," Stultz said, "and they are in markets (including Houston and Dallas) that are attractive to content distributors."

Aresco is confident based on two factors: his belief in the power of major distributors to monetize their content deals, and as one of the final pieces of the college puzzle up for grabs, networks will compete to be in the American's major markets as a hedge against more changes in audience viewing and spending.

"For decades we have heard that ... there will be a huge correction in the marketplace," Aresco said. "But fees have always seemed to go up. There have been some flat periods, but not many.

"Now, new technologies have spawned new, richer platforms. Live sports will remain valuable, and if anything, it grows in value because there is only so much of it."

It will be interesting to see what happens that's for sure. Could this help the AAC regain power status? Only time will tell.

The big question is who will the schools be in 2018. This variable could change everything up or down. 07-coffee3

Most probably, AAC membership will not change prior to 2018.

Is NIU moving to a city?

We bring ACCESS to the Chicago market as we fall within the media market area. No, we don't own the Chicago market. Not even NW or UofI does. It's more of an ND market, but realistically Chicago is a pro sports town. However, people in Chicago DO watch NIU. Our TV numbers are right up there with the AAC's top teams for viewership and our orange bowl numbers were among the best ever (and it wasn't even close) for Chicago viewership

Yes bless UH, but a lot of people seem to forget that was a 1 score game for almost 3 quarters of the game. We just had a bad quarter for the worst part of the game and FSU capitalized

I think NIU would be a smart add for the AAC. So would ODU, WKU and Marshall.

No college "owns" a big city market. They are simply too diverse for one school to "own" it. That said, its not hard for a college to command a solid audience in a big city market. That's really all conferences are hoping for when they take a school in a large market.

Assuming we make it to 2018 with no departures, I expect our value will at least double. We have been a tremendous bargain for the ratings and performance the league has delivered. A double (or even a triple) of the current contract would still represent a solid bargain for a network. We'd make about 25% of a P5 conference yet deliver 50-70% of the ratings that a P5 delivers. That's a good deal.

Oh we definitely choked hard, one of the worst collapses I've ever seen from ANY basketball team (thankfully not the worst, thanks Northern Iowa!). But we're a young team relying heavily on freshmen play, we'll only get better

San Diego State can actually deliver its #28 market, is a destination city and a recruiting hot bed.

The Aztecs will be in an even better position when the Chargers leave.

The AAC already has a winning record against the ACC without those guys. Just imagine how much more lopsided it'd get if we added them. 04-jawdrop

Perhaps the ACC should add them. 07-coffee3

RE: Changing Landscape of TV w/Aresco Quotes
People are so snobby, the leadership at NIU is playing catch up and they're doing a pretty good job on focusing their efforts. If NIU is given the opportunity I think they can compete with anyone here, and nationally as well. And for sure it's a good market, much better than some already in the conference - the market is just a high ceiling for NIU. Keep on keepin on. Personally I hope to be in a conference that makes geographical sense someday, but until then I don't really care as long as they can get a top 25 ranking during the season nothing else matters.

I can name one, without even thinking about it. TO$U, and its campus, known to most of us as Columbus, Ohio. Columbus is TO$U's bi@^#h.
