UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
Dawkins, who came out of DC, was Coach K's first great player at Duke and lead them to K's first Final Four...then after a NBA career...Dawkins spent 11 years next to Coach K on the Duke Bench, including last 10 as Assoc Head Coach prior to taking the Stanford job.

I believe he played under Larry Brown too at San Antonio, so that'll be a good conference storyline.

Believe Brown coached Dawkins in Johnny's 3rd and final year in San Antonio...as Dawkins then played in Philly the following year.

Playing for Brown, even if for just one year, certainly can't hurt for one's future coaching desires.

RE: UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
Some UCF fans were worried that at least one of the candidates mentioned for the UCF Job doesn't use a traditional 5 in his offensive scheme...as UCF would most likely lose Tacko Fall to a transfer if that coach was hired....thought this was a good point mentioned in another thread by Big East Homer, as Dawkins did offer a scholarship to Tacko while at Stanford:

Not at the top of my list but far from the bottom. I think he'll put together a good schedule. Stanford did offer Tacko.

RE: UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
The good news, for American Conference fans, is that UCF should not be a drag on RPI much longer. Since joining the American, UCF finshed, 164, 287 and 199 in Pomeroy. Dawkins should have UCF consistently in the Top 150 and will crack the Top 100 from time to time.

The bad news, for UCF fans, is that Dawkins' ceiling is limited, and he will take UCF to the NCAA tournament less than he took Stanford, which was once in 8 years.

Next season (if everything does as planned), might be UCF's first season in 5 years that they will have the full 13 scholarship limit (but some might be used on a transfer or two so UCF might have 11 players on next year's team), which was going to help build UCF's depth regardless who the head coach was going to be...and if one of them is former Freshmen All-Rookie AAC player BJ Taylor (hope he can come back to close to 100%), will be interesting to see what he and hopefully Tacko can do together.

RE: UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
Overall I think this is a good hire for UCF and the conference. He definitely checks a lot of the important boxes.

College and pro playing experience under 2 top coaches in Brown and Coach K.
10 years’ experience as Dukes associate head coach.
Post season success with P5 Stanford winning the NIT and making the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Much less risky than hiring some no name assistant with no head coaching experience from a P5 or a mid major coach off of 1 hot season.

Is he a perfect hire? No, but I think as someone to get the program back on it's feet it's a solid choice.

he would be a better fit at Tulane, but still a good hire.

UCF Basketball (at the end of Spring/Summer semester) will have graduated all 15 Seniors that were recruited by and stayed with the program under Donnie Jones.

Now the first part is important...and ever since former AD Keith Tribble (the main reason why UCF Basketball and Football were placed on Probation at the same time), was fired...UCF Basketball and Football hadn't had a sniff of improprieties so hopefully that will continue.

UCF is the #1 Public Univ in the Nation in regards to Athletic Program Graduation Success Rate...and no doubt Dawkins being at Duke/Stanford for 20 plus years...UCF Basketball (academically) should remain in good hands.

Not a flashy hire like Frost was, but it is a name that people know and a reputation that will help UCF stay out of trouble. UCF's program has suffered mightily as a result of the sanctions. Coming out of that next year with a coach who can hopefully stabilize the program is key. NCAAs are not at issue here. Getting to a position of having decent in-conference results is the first priority.

RE: UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
Clearly Dawkins wasn't as successful at Stanford as he needed to be. It was his first head coaching job and he held that position for 8 years. He is a former player at the highest levels and has had the opportunity to learn from some great coaches. Hopefully Dawkins can be more successful in his second head coaching position having learned from the Stanford job. He's a really high character guy and is a member of the NABC Board of Directors as well as the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Ethics Coalition so you know he will run our program the right way. For some perspective, Coach K didn't even make the NCAA tournament until his 9th year coaching D1 and 4th year at Duke, Dean Smith didn't make the tournament until his 6th year at UNC and John Wooden made the tournament 3 times in his first 13 years at UCLA. Give him a chance, coaches can get better and learn the same as players.

I love it! So he's an expert on what cheaters do and at the same time above reproach when he does cheat for us. This is brilliant!

Frost doesn't have a record. Everybody is awesome until they lose.

Given who was seemingly available this is not a good hire IMHO. And yes, Lebo sucks. He's far and away better than Lebo.
