I think the bar is pretty low for basketball at UCF. The reality is that 10 years ago we were playing in the ASUN. We've never won an NIT or NCAA game and haven't made the NCAA tourney since leaving the ASUN.
If Dawkins can raise the expectations to the point that we think we can do better than a coach that has won the NIT and been to the sweet sixteen, then he's done a great job.

I think Danny White's expectations are high. I think Dawkins has some pieces to work with.

All I can say is I hope both UCF and USF turn the corner soon in BBall. I want AAC Basketball to bury the current Big East.

He is a former player at the highest levels and has had the opportunity to learn from some great coaches. Hopefully Dawkins can be more successful in his second head coaching position having learned from the Stanford job. He's a really high character guy and is a member of the NABC Board of Directors as well as the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Ethics Coalition so you know he will run our program the right way. For some perspective, Coach K didn't even make the NCAA tournament until his 9th year coaching D1 and 4th year at Duke, Dean Smith didn't make the tournament until his 6th year at UNC and John Wooden made the tournament 3 times in his first 13 years at UCLA. Give him a chance, coaches can get better and learn the same as players.

Interesting way to look at it...as even both Duke and UNC had past NCAA success prior to Coach K and Smith arrived...while UCF has never earned a NCAA at-large invite (only 4 trips do to winning the lowly TAAC/ASUN).

UCF Basketball... I'm a fan and I even hit the Snooze button.

He's better than the alternatives. I'm happy giving him a shot, can't do worse than we have been doing.

As long as Football gets better, AD White is good in my book. Not much of a basketball fan.

UCF's program has suffered mightily as a result of the sanctions. Coming out of that next year with a coach who can hopefully stabilize the program is key. NCAAs are not at issue here. Getting to a position of having decent in-conference results is the first priority.

Frost doesn't have a record. Everybody is awesome until they lose.

UCF Basketball (at the end of Spring/Summer semester) will have graduated all 15 Seniors that were recruited by and stayed with the program under Donnie Jones.

Now the first part is important...and ever since former AD Keith Tribble (the main reason why UCF Basketball and Football were placed on Probation at the same time), was fired...UCF Basketball and Football hadn't had a sniff of improprieties so hopefully that will continue.

UCF is the #1 Public Univ in the Nation in regards to Athletic Program Graduation Success Rate...and no doubt Dawkins being at Duke/Stanford for 20 plus years...UCF Basketball (academically) should remain in good hands.

If everyone of your "student athletes" graduates from UCF, that is not necessarily a validation of UCF's academic credentials or the rigor of its curriculum since, as we know, not every major college "student athlete" is of the highest intellectual caliber. Just sayin'.

This is an interesting hire.

Johnny Dawkins had the resources of Stanford behind him. How was he not able to recruit on the level to win the Pac 12? If I am a UCF fan, that concerns me.

I agree. I'd rather see the Notre Dame Assistant hired than someone who made One NCAA Tourney out of Eight from a place with the resources of Stanford. Honestly, I was hoping for Pikell from Stony Brook, but there were no connections with our AD that way.
Hopefully Dawkins learned something from his time in Palo Alto and has some drive in Orlando. Call me skeptical.

Yeah, great lineage via Duke but he flopped at Stanford. There's a reason why he fell to UCF.

RE: UCF hires Johnny Dawkins as new Basketball Head Coach
As with all college sports success for BB at most schools is judged by an unreasonable standard. In a field of 347 division 1 programs to make the NCAAs even once out of 8 years is pretty good. At UCF it would be outstanding. It takes more than resources. It takes years of sustained success in basketball to achieve the expectations of regular NCAA appearances. There are several programs in the AAC that have that reputation Memphis, UConn and UC. SMU is moving toward that. UCF is not even on the map.

I see this hire much like the GOL hire. It is a known name, older coach so success will not as easily tempt him to a new position. Hopefully will build a foundation at UCF to start winning conference games and competing in that arena first. Then maybe UCF can look to some post season appearances.

The reason has little to do with his performance at Stanford and more about his Duke ties. UCF AD Danny White's father is AD there.

If that's the reason you're talking about than I agree. Otherwise, you're just talking out of your rectus anonymous.

That being said, a recent Sweet 16 and two recent NIT Championships (in the last 5 years) are nothing for UCF (and most schools) to look down on. If anything, he's shown that he can turn it up when the lights are on. Here's hoping that it's a good fit and he thrives.

I'm liking this hire. Dawkins should put together a good schedule and recruit well. I'm cautiously optimistic.
