Answer: the NCHC needs a tenth team besides Ariz St, and the tenth team is BGSU. It would keep Miami and W Mich happy, who aren't that keen on more travel going further west to Tempe. Minn St-Mankato is the other team in the running, but if their chosen, Miami and W Mich could team with BGSU and restart their CCHA with western AHA me bers.
So the WCHA will add at least one team to replace BGSU: Minot St?
A few of those DII teams have a successful history... By that I mean the Michigan schools...
Even as a Big Ten fan, I would love to see another midwest powerhouse conference,
BGSU
Miami
Western Michigan
Minnesota Duluth
North Dakota
St Cloud
Mich Tech
Lake Superior
Northern Michigan
Omaha
I'd watch a conference made up like that.
I think NoDak's scenario is closer to how this might actually play out. Personally, as a Bowling Green fan, I'd rather launch a new CCHA with Miami and Western Michigan. But, if offered a slot in the NCHC, I suppose BGSU would have to take it and just deal with the travel costs. (As it is, the WCHA can't be cheap.) At least we would have the bus trips to Miami and Western Michigan.

Think they will be a schism in the NCHC eventually, as the MAC schools aren't interested in expansion to the west, like UNLV and Ariz St. But for now, if the MAC schools want to raise the level of play and build up their programs, the NCHC is the best choice. Denver and CC dearly want western expansion and UND does too, although we're more interested in keeping Denver happy.
Speaking for UND fans, there is a lot of affinity toward Mich Tech, but not former CCHA teams except Michigan, who everybody seems to hate.

RE: ND to join the Big Ten
WCCO in Minneapolis is reporting the Arizona St will not be joining the Big Ten for hockey.
ASU will either join the NCHC or WCHA in 2017 or 2018. Their arena plans are not yet set.
If ASU goes to the NCHC, the likely 10th school is Bowling Green IMHO. The WCHA probably takes Simon Fraser to replace BGSU.
If ASU chooses the WCHA (and dont know why they would) Simon Fraser would be the 12th team.

@Flugempire spent months saying to people that ASU was going to join the B1G for hockey. He was wrong.

Yep, that is what he always claimed that "BTM" told him over dinner.

IMO, they would be better off working on growing LaCrosse. There are some great schools like Denver and Qunippic (spelling ?) out of Canada they could try to expand with.
If the B1G gets the ACC schools, then the B1G will easily have the best LaCrosse conference.

I for one am glad az state isn't joining. I Wish big leadership would just add north Dakota or umd already. Then try to add Boston and Denver to get to 10 if no big ten schools are looking to move up in the future. Im really not sure Boston would leave hockey east but there is always the chance.

? Are you suggesting that Quinnipiac is a Canadian school? Quinnipiac is located in Connecticut. As of today the only NCAA school north of the border is D2 Simon Fraser.

North Dakota would be ideal from a fan interest standpoint and a competitive standpoint. I get that it doesn't do anything market-wise, but in hockey this is like the Nebraska add if not a bigger deal.

^ agreed, and also nice due to being a great geographical fit and not having to deal with the issue of full membership.

RE: ND to join the Big Ten
the BIG wants a quality program. North Dakota offers that. Market or not, I think most of the B1G not just Minnesota would be happy to have the current national champions in their league and on their schedule
