Chad Spann had 0 carries in that game lol. NIU Had 72 rushing yards on 31 carries.
Harnish went 17/29 for 326 yards and 2 TDs in that game.
The game NIU won in Minnesota two years later, Spann (and really everyone who carried the ball) had a huge game.
I remember Spann having a big game against Minnesota. So it was the 2nd time we played them. Either way, Harnish was average at best his first two years.
Yeah, Spann's game was in 2010. Hell,
I could have had 80 yards rushing in that game the way the Gophers laid down and let us kick their ass that night.
Harnish was definitely a tale of talent before development. His throws against 2008 Minnesota consisted of slants to Nathan Palmer that went for big yardage, but I remember coming back from that game and saying to other Huskie fans "I think we've got a QB." Then, he got hurt early in the the game against WMU 1 week later and wasn't quite the same when he returned. The following year, he got the knee hurt on the cheap shot at Toledo and was not himself the rest of the way.
At that point, I remember thinking "I think I've seen enough of the Chandler Harnish show. He just is what he is and can't stay healthy." Then, there was the weird-ass saga of "is he hurt? Is he OK? Is Grady going to be the guy?" To this day, I've never gotten a straight answer on what was going on there that led to him perhaps done for his career and then being benched for Grady. I remember seeing him throw in Spring 2010 (or perhaps fall camp before the opener) and friends (who were hot for
any QB besides Harnish (remember Brandon Rogers, AJ Hill, Billy Lowe, and Casey Weston? Don't fall in love with prospects) asking me what I thought. My response was, "You're not going to like it. It's Harnish... and not by a little."
Well, things worked out for the best. I just know I want that QB as a 22 year old and not a guy at 18, I don't care how fast he runs or how badly we
think we might suck.
