For expansion, let's look beyond attendance to:
1. How much ticket revenue do a school's fans generate, plus
2. How much do a school's fans donate on top of their ticket purchases
Source USAToday. Three-year approximate "fan support" average:
UMass = $2.6M
Northern Ill = $3.1M
That's
PITIFUL. Northern Illinois is particularly troubling given their football success.
Among the G5 football schools outside the Mountain West, the top supported programs are:
Marshall $7M
Old Dominion $7M
ULaLa $7M
Toledo is the top supported MAC school at $5M per year.
For reference, American schools average $9-20M per year in fan support (but SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, Temple and Navy did not report).
Wichita State is thinking about starting a football program again, but are many years away from actually fielding a FBS team. Their fans throw $12M a year at the program already.
***************
Marshall has decent attendance at 27K per year. They are 33-8 in football the last three years. They share a history with UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulsa, ECU and Tulane.
If we lose ONE team to the Big 12, it is most likely Cincy. Marshall is in the same general vicinity as Cincy (150 miles away).
It's pretty clear to me that our goal is to be "the sixth power conference" in football. If so, Marshall is
BY FAR the best choice to replace Cincy. And I imagine they have let our leaders know they want in.
From a media/bowl standpoint, Army is also a good choice but I don't see them giving up independence and they have sucked for years/don't help us competitively. Plus there are several issues with the Army-Navy game that would need to be resolved. I just can't imagine they are "waiting in the wings" to join us, so they are probably not the school to which Aresco is referring.
