Keys better than both. The non tourist sides at least
Is that in south Florida too?
Which south Florida? The geographic one or the Tampa one?
Serious question, is USF an anti-directional school?
It was named back in the '50s when the state legislature thought everything below Lake City was "South Florida".

Affordable air conditioning changed everything.

I'll let our President know that a few of our hated rivals surprisingly don't like our name. I'm sure she will get right on it for you. ;-)

We were supposed to have a campus named USF Polytechnic but as usual, we build awesome campuses and they converted it to an independent campus, just like they did with USF Ft Meyers which is now Florida Gulf Coast university... heck, we save New College and made it USF New College before they went broke and yet again, once we turned it around, they made it independent.
I hope USF never opens another satellite campus. We spend the money and then it becomes a new state university.

That's true...let alone with every new off-campus investment, it takes away time/$$ from the main campus...and that's certainly a gamble UCF will have to deal with in the coming decades with their new downtown campus.
With FAMU School of Law just down the street...I could see some crooked FLA politicians one day wanting to change UCF Downtown to FAMU-Orlando....one never really knows what the future will bring...law of unintended consequences.

It wasn't.
USF Ft Myers, started in a local high school in the 80's...then moved to Edison Community College Campus a few years later (which is now Florida Southwestern State).
FGCU was approved back in 1994 in an area by I-75, then owned by huge UF Donor Ben Hill Griffin, and built up from scratch and opened in 1997.
The state then closed USF Ft Myers to avoid public univ duplication.

Dont know where you get your info but the money to build that campus was slated to be a USF campus since we had established a University down there and built it up. At the last second, they decided to make it a full fledged university.
Once the campus was built the people at USF Ft Myers had a choice of transferring an getting a USF degree or a FGCU degree... same choice they had for USF Polytechnic.
UF pushed to make it an indy campus. USF Lakeland was pushed to become indy by JD Alexander... who is the grandson of Ben Hill Griffin. The last thing UF wants is USF to get any more power. We already are beating FSU at several key metrics and will be the next university with Pr-Eminence status (which is millions in funding).
They've been blocking us for decades and it isnt well hidden at all. Ive been in Polk Politics for nearly 20 years now and Ive watched it all go down.
Id suggest UCF be careful cause once you start really moving up, youll be on the radar. That lake Nona Campus is prime for the taking.... just sayin

They're not taking our medical school nor our downtown campus. Unfortunately for UF, UCF is and has become firmly entrenched in Orlando.

Much like USF has become entrenched and powerful in tampa. At some point UF/FSU will be forced to accept us into their little clique. Yet another place where we can team up if genshaft and Hitt are willing.

USF is in the process of moving our medical school to downtown Tampa and will be a centerpiece of the redevelopment district that the Billionaire Vinik is building.... and it scares the crap out of me. I dont trust the "independent" board. Everytime I think USF is firmly entrenched enough to not be screwed with, we lose something.
USF had a campus in lakeland for almost 23 years and they still took it from us.... nothing is 100% guranteed and never trust UF politicians.

That is easily worth the gamble...as USF "needs" most of their College of Medicine near/next to Tampa General (main teaching hospital in Tampa)...as that is where most of the USF MD's have privileges and thats where most of their students/residents practice.
Having everything located downtown will only help make USF COM that much more attractive to attend and/or practice/teach.
There would be almost zero chance that USF would lose control of that COM.

I really dont think we could, but I never would have thought we would lose all we have. USF invested MILLIONS into starting the Poly idea. We were going to be the first University in the state to go to the Polytechnic style of learning. It was supposed to become a major research hub.... and within 3 months JD was able to abuse his position as an outgoing senator and strip us.
Now they have $200 million invested in a campus that doesnt have any accredidation, fewer than a 1,000 students and it will take it 5 more years just to get it back to the enrollment numbers they had when USF was running it. Maybe within 20 years it will be a tier 1 university...which it already was under USF. The lack of vision by the board is astounding. For UCFs sake, I hope they realize that you are much stronger as a system than by stripping things away. So far, I dont see many areas that they could break off.
